Quick answer
For a castle stay near Edinburgh, compare Dalhousie Castle near Bonnyrigg with Melville Castle near Lasswade first. At Dalhousie, reserve a Castle category rather than a Lodge room. Melville describes a roughly 30-minute drive from the city, subject to traffic. Carberry Tower is a historic mansion-and-estate comparison. The seven remaining recommendations are clearly labelled country-house, castle-side or castle-view alternatives; they are useful fallbacks, not seven more castles.
Editorially researched from dated official sources, with no personal stay, road-time test or accessibility inspection. Property photographs are used with permission and credited to the respective hotels.
Hotels in Edinburgh
Ranked by the selection criteria for this guide. Check the exact room, terms and inclusions before booking.
Dalhousie Castle
Bonnyrigg- Best for
- A final-night celebration built around a confirmed castle bedroom and a reserved dinner, with time to enjoy the property before departure.
- Trade-off
- Lodge accommodation is a different product from sleeping inside the castle
Start here when sleeping inside a historic castle is the point of your Edinburgh break. The room directory separates Castle categories from Lodge accommodation, so the building deserves more attention than the package name. Plan a hotel-centred evening rather than repeated journeys into town.
Booking tipHave a named Castle room, dinner venue and departure pickup confirmed together; a Lodge room is a different building choice.
Melville Castle
Lasswade- Best for
- A castle bedroom and an unhurried dinner, with Eskbank as a possible rail gateway after arranging the final transfer.
- Trade-off
- Estate approach adds a final journey even after reaching the gate
The useful first comparison with Dalhousie for a castle night south of Edinburgh. Melville combines individually categorised bedrooms with an estate setting near Lasswade. It is particularly worth comparing when you want a four-poster room or a rail-plus-taxi arrival rather than a full city hotel.
Booking tipReserve a four-poster category if essential, and pre-book the Eskbank taxi in both directions.
Carberry Tower Mansion House and Estate
Musselburgh- Best for
- A mansion-house room, estate time and dinner near Musselburgh, or a wedding visit where the accommodation building is confirmed in advance.
- Trade-off
- A mansion-and-estate alternative, not an interchangeable promise of a medieval castle stay
Compare Carberry when an East Lothian mansion-and-estate night would satisfy the wish for historic atmosphere. Its current accommodation separates Mansion House bedrooms and suites from Estate Houses. Choose the former when the historic building matters, rather than assuming every stay on the estate buys the same experience.
Booking tipConfirm a Mansion House room rather than an Estate House, and reserve The Hearth separately.
Prestonfield House
LuxurySouthside, Edinburgh- Best for
- Romantic breaks, celebrations, drivers, Arthur’s Seat and travellers who want a secluded hotel experience.
- Trade-off
- Not a walk-out city-centre base for most sightseeing itineraries
A romantic 23-room country-house experience within Edinburgh, trading walk-out sightseeing for parkland, drama and privacy.
Booking tipPick the room for mood and floor as well as price; top-floor Luxury Bedrooms have mansard ceilings, while larger Estate Rooms add space and views.
Norton House Hotel & Spa
Ingliston, Edinburgh- Best for
- A spa-led retreat near the airport with swimming, hydrotherapy and a country-house setting.
- Trade-off
- Outside the walkable city centre
The strongest country-house alternative in this Edinburgh shortlist for travellers who want pool and hydrotherapy time to occupy much of the stay. The Ingliston setting rewards an estate-focused break and costs convenience for repeated city-centre evenings.
Booking tipBook swim time, treatments and the transfer together. Ask whether arrival and departure access follows the group’s published 14:00-to-noon entitlement.
The Witchery by the Castle
LuxuryOld Town, Edinburgh- Best for
- Romantic celebrations, atmospheric Old Town stays and travellers who want the hotel itself to feel like an occasion.
- Trade-off
- Historic buildings and individual layouts demand careful access checks
The most theatrical romantic stay in central Edinburgh: nine individually designed suites in historic buildings beside the Castle.
Booking tipStudy the exact suite page and access route. Every suite has one king bed, no extra beds are available and layouts differ sharply.
100 Princes Street
LuxuryNew Town, Edinburgh- Best for
- Couples, solo travellers, celebrations and families prepared to book interleading rooms directly.
- Trade-off
- Entry-level Single Rooms average 14 square metres
An intimate Princes Street townhouse with standout castle views, individual rooms and useful interleading options for larger parties.
Booking tipReserve Executive Double - Castle View, Junior Suite - Castle View, Isobel or Archibald; an ordinary Executive King or Terrace Suite is not a view guarantee.
The Caledonian Edinburgh
LuxuryWest End, Edinburgh- Best for
- Spa breaks, families wanting a pool, West End plans, connecting rooms and travellers arriving through Haymarket.
- Trade-off
- No on-site self-parking or valet parking
A grand West End railway hotel with castle views, a serious spa and an indoor pool, well suited to families and longer city breaks.
Booking tipKeep with Castle View in the Premier or suite name. Two Queen Bed Premier Room with Castle View is published for four; King Premier without the view label is different.
Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa, Edinburgh
West End, Edinburgh- Best for
- Adults prioritising a shared thermal circuit and rooftop hydrotherapy alongside a West End city stay.
- Trade-off
- Ordinary pool access is a different entitlement from Escape at One
The clearest Edinburgh choice for a thermal spa as the main event, provided you reserve Escape at One rather than assuming a bedroom includes it. The rooftop hydropool and separate swimming pool serve different purposes.
Booking tipChoose a Castle View Room, Edinburgh Castle Suite or Edinburgh Grand Suite; Executive Club alone does not establish a Castle outlook. Confirm spa access separately.
Apex Grassmarket Hotel
Grassmarket, Edinburgh- Best for
- Travellers who want a private balcony with a documented Castle outlook and evenings around the Grassmarket.
- Trade-off
- Grassmarket activity may matter to light sleepers; ask about the exact room’s exposure
The clearest Castle-view balcony choice in our shortlist: reserve the named view category, as a standard City Room is a different booking.
Booking tipChoose Castle View Superior or Castle View Deluxe Room with Balcony; City and Family are separate products.
Choose by your priorities
If you must sleep inside a castle
Compare Dalhousie Castle categories with Melville’s named rooms; confirm the building in writing.
If you want rail plus a pre-booked final taxi
Compare Melville via Eskbank, remembering that the hotel warns there is no taxi rank.
If you want a historic mansion and grounds east of Edinburgh
Choose a Mansion House room at Carberry rather than an Estate House.
If you want a Castle view while staying in the city
Start with the named Castle View categories at 100 Princes Street.
If you want spa time near the airport more than a castle bedroom
Compare Norton House and reserve the actual spa session and departure transfer.
Quick picks: best castle hotels near Edinburgh
Compare Dalhousie and Melville first if sleeping in a castle is essential. Choose the room’s building before the dinner package, four-poster bed or view. Carberry is the historic mansion comparison; the remaining options solve different versions of a special Edinburgh night.
| Hotel | What you are actually booking | Choose it for | Check before paying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dalhousie Castle, Bonnyrigg | Castle hotel with separate Lodge categories | A night inside the castle and a reserved dinner | The confirmation must name a Castle category |
| Melville Castle, Lasswade | Castle hotel on an estate | Four-poster options and a planned retreat | Exact room, dinner and final transfer |
| Carberry Tower, near Musselburgh | Historic mansion and estate | House atmosphere, grounds and an East Lothian base | Mansion House bedroom versus Estate House |
| Prestonfield House | Edinburgh country house | Seclusion without choosing a rural castle | Your city-evening transport plan |
| Norton House Hotel & Spa | Airport-side country-house spa hotel | A spa-led final night | Swim/treatment booking and airport pickup |
| The Witchery by the Castle | Historic suites beside Edinburgh Castle | Castlehill atmosphere and dinner | Suite access; this is outside the Castle |
| 100 Princes Street | Central hotel with named Castle View rooms | Keeping the skyline in the city itinerary | Purchase a Castle View category |
| The Caledonian Edinburgh | Grand city hotel with selected Castle-view rooms | A landmark city stay | Named view category and leisure inclusions |
| Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa | City hotel with a separate thermal-spa offer | Making spa time the main event | Escape at One access beyond a bedroom reservation |
| Apex Grassmarket Hotel | Old Town hotel with named view/balcony rooms | Castle outlook and an outdoor perch | Castle View Deluxe Room with Balcony |
These are ten recommendations across two castle hotels, one mansion estate and seven alternatives, not ten interchangeable castles. For neighbourhoods and a wider city shortlist, use our Edinburgh hotel hub and where to stay in Edinburgh.
Castle hotels within a short drive of the city
Dalhousie Castle: book the castle building deliberately
Dalhousie Castle near Bonnyrigg is the starting comparison when the bedroom’s setting is the reason for travelling. Its current room directory makes a useful distinction between Castle and Lodge accommodation. A Lodge Classic or Lodge Suite may suit a different trip, but it does not fulfil the same promise as sleeping inside the castle.
Begin with the named Castle categories, then ask which room is available for your party and whether its access route suits you. Reserve dinner at the same time if an evening in the house is central to the plan. The site currently lists Dungeon and Ramsay dining; confirm the actual venue and service date rather than assuming a package includes whichever restaurant you prefer.
Allow enough of the afternoon to make the move out of Edinburgh worthwhile. A late check-in followed by an early airport departure leaves little time for the experience you are buying. Ask for a timed departure plan before making the room non-refundable.
Melville Castle: compare the room and the arrival together
Melville Castle near Lasswade is the other close castle-hotel comparison. Its room range includes Classic bedrooms, four-poster rooms and suites. If the four-poster is part of the celebration, reserve that product explicitly; a request attached to another category is weaker evidence of what you have bought.
Melville’s own directions describe roughly 30 minutes by car from central Edinburgh and the airport. Treat that as the hotel’s approximate guidance, not a guarantee at rush hour or for an early flight. The approach matters too: its directions warn against the golf-course entrance and identify the Dalkeith/Eskbank approach.
This is a useful option for a short retreat with dinner on site, provided you plan the return journey. Check event arrangements for your dates and whether your chosen room, meal and access requirements can all be confirmed together.
Carberry Tower: the mansion-and-estate comparison
Carberry Tower Mansion House and Estate is near Musselburgh in East Lothian. It earns a comparison for historic house atmosphere, grounds and a hotel-centred evening, rather than being presented as an identical medieval-castle experience. Although the estate uses castle language, the practical booking distinction is Mansion House versus Estate House.
Choose a Mansion House room or suite when staying in the historic building matters. The separate Estate Houses serve another kind of trip; being on the same estate is not the same bedroom proposition. The current dining offer is The Hearth, so check the current restaurant information instead of relying on an old wedding brochure’s dining name.
For wedding guests, confirm where the room sits relative to the celebration and what the room block includes. For an independent romantic stay, ask about private events and which public spaces will be available. Do not assume a venue’s wedding capacity proves overnight availability for unrelated guests.
Choose the base for the following morning
Midlothian, south of the city: compare Dalhousie and Melville when the castle itself is the destination. Plan a single move out of town after sightseeing, dinner at the property and a pre-arranged departure. Repeated journeys to central restaurants weaken the convenience of this choice.
East Lothian: compare Carberry when a mansion and estate near Musselburgh fit the next stage of your trip. Price the actual transfer rather than treating an Edinburgh postal description as a central address. Do not move east solely on the assumption that every country property is equally convenient for the airport.
Edinburgh or the airport side: keep a central hotel when you still want a full evening in the city. Compare Norton House when spa time and the departure journey matter more than the castle building. The right last night is the one that leaves enough time for both the treat and the practical departure.
The brief’s 30–40-minute drive is a useful planning aim. We do not promise it for every traffic condition, departure address or property here, and we have not expanded the radius to make up ten castle hotels.
Getting there without a car
Melville gives the clearest published rail-and-transfer instructions in this comparison: travel via Eskbank and pre-book the final taxi. The hotel specifically warns that Eskbank has no taxi rank. Its long estate drive also means that reaching the roadside entrance is a different arrival from reaching reception.
Check the actual train for your travel day, then give the taxi firm the arrival time, party size, luggage and hotel entrance. Book the return at the same time if you have an early departure. Ask what happens if the train is delayed and how long the driver will wait. A hotel booking does not reserve that pickup automatically.
For Dalhousie and Carberry, agree the practical arrival point with the property before choosing a rail ticket. Do not turn a nearby station pin into a recommended luggage walk without checking the route. For bus options, use Lothian’s current maps and times alongside the hotel’s directions; confirm the final walk from the stop to reception before travelling with luggage.
Compare the complete cost of rail, both taxis and any airport transfer with a direct car journey. For a short celebration, one planned door-to-door transfer may buy more usable time than a complicated change of services.
Castle stays vs castle-view hotel rooms
If the wish is to wake up inside a castle, stay with Dalhousie or Melville and confirm the building. If the wish is to see Edinburgh Castle while keeping city restaurants and sightseeing close, the city alternatives below are more relevant. A view label says nothing about admission to the fortress or the building containing your room.
Prestonfield House: country-house theatre within Edinburgh
Prestonfield House is the country-house alternative when you want privacy and parkland rather than a Castle View booking. Its official stay pages establish the house-and-suite proposition; it is not a castle hotel. Compare it with the rural choices when the atmosphere matters more than the architectural label. Plan the journey for a city-centre dinner instead of assuming a secluded setting gives walk-out Royal Mile convenience.
Norton House: put the spa and departure first
Norton House Hotel & Spa is the airport-side country-house alternative. Its published spa offer makes it worth comparing when the priority is leisure time before travelling home. It does not answer the wish to sleep in a castle. Confirm your swim time, treatment and transfer together; geographical proximity to an airport does not reserve a taxi or establish a shuttle to the terminal.
The Witchery: beside the Castle, outside its walls
The Witchery by the Castle offers historic suites and dining on Castlehill. Choose it when an atmospheric Old Town evening would satisfy the brief more conveniently than leaving the city. Its name describes proximity, not accommodation inside Edinburgh Castle. Ask about the exact suite’s stairs and luggage route; a short distance from an attraction is not proof of easy access.
100 Princes Street: book the named outlook
100 Princes Street lists Executive Double - Castle View among its rooms. This is the central comparison when a skyline outlook matters more than sleeping inside a castle. Keep the purchased category in the confirmation, and ask whether your required bed set-up and access needs exist in that category. A generic room request should not be treated as a guaranteed Castle view.
The Caledonian: a grand city-hotel alternative
The Caledonian Edinburgh publishes selected Castle-view rooms and suites. Compare it when you want a landmark city-hotel night with a confirmed outlook. It is a different trip from an estate retreat: reserve the view category you want and check any leisure inclusions against the actual rate, rather than buying a standard room on the assumption that the whole hotel faces the Castle.
Sheraton Grand: make the spa booking explicit
Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa is the city spa alternative when the thermal experience matters most. One Spa sells the thermal suite and rooftop hydropool as Escape at One. A bedroom reservation should not be read as that separate booking. Reserve the relevant session before committing if it is the reason for the stay, and reconfirm any maintenance restrictions.
Apex Grassmarket: the named balcony alternative
Apex Grassmarket Hotel publishes a Castle View Deluxe Room with Balcony. It earns its place for a specific combination of city location, outlook and outdoor space. Check that exact category rather than simply asking for a balcony. Consider the evening setting and the route with luggage as well as the view, especially if the final night follows a tiring sightseeing day.
For a fuller comparison of outlooks and room categories, continue to Edinburgh hotels with Castle views. That guide addresses the view intent separately from this castle-stay shortlist.
Spa, dining and grounds
Do not buy a castle label as a spa promise. Dalhousie’s former spa URL redirected to a Spa Therapist careers page when checked on 19 October 2026. That does not prove closure, but it is insufficient evidence for promising current facilities, opening hours or room-rate access. Get a written answer covering the actual facilities and session before booking on that basis.
Carberry advertises in-room wellness treatments; this is not evidence of a pool or thermal suite. For a break where water facilities are essential, compare Norton House and the Sheraton, then use our Edinburgh spa-hotel guide to check the distinction between swimming, thermal access and treatments.
Book dinner as a separate part of the itinerary even when the rate mentions a meal allowance. Confirm the named restaurant, service date, dietary arrangements and what happens if a private event affects the usual venue. Grounds add most value when your arrival leaves daylight to use them; allow for weather and ask about suitable paths rather than assuming every estate walk is accessible.
What to check before booking
- Building and room: does the confirmation say Castle, Mansion House, Lodge or Estate House, and does that meet the reason for coming?
- One-night terms: are your dates sold for one night, or subject to a minimum stay or event restriction? Compare the actual cancellation and deposit deadlines.
- Wedding arrangements: for guests, confirm the room-block deadline and transfer; for couples planning an event, request a separate written proposal covering accommodation allocation and exclusive use.
- The whole access route: ask about parking or drop-off, entrance steps, lift stops, bedroom doors, bathroom measurements and dining access for the particular room. We have not inspected any route.
- Every guest: confirm beds, ages, extra occupants and any pet requirements in the room you intend to buy. A suite name alone does not establish capacity.
- Next morning: agree collection time, breakfast or a takeaway alternative, luggage handling and hire-car return before turning a final-night treat into a rushed departure.
- Total price: compare the same dates, occupancy, meal inclusions, facility sessions and payment terms, including any applicable charges. This guide does not quote live rates.
Castle room categories are narrower than a whole city’s hotel inventory. Start checking early when dates are fixed, but keep the room, dinner and transport decisions connected: paying for the building is worthwhile only if the rest of the stay lets you enjoy it.

Quick answers
Common questions about hotels in Edinburgh
Practical answers for comparing the shortlist before you book.
Which castle hotels near Edinburgh should I compare first?
Dalhousie Castle and Melville Castle are the two castle-hotel starting points here. The key booking distinction is the bedroom itself: Dalhousie sells both Castle and Lodge categories. Carberry Tower is presented separately as a mansion-and-estate comparison, while the other seven options are country houses or city alternatives.
Are all these hotels within 30–40 minutes of Edinburgh?
No fixed drive time is promised. Melville publishes approximately 30 minutes from central Edinburgh, but traffic and the departure address matter. Treat 30–40 minutes as a planning aim, then check the actual city-to-hotel and hotel-to-airport journeys for your dates. This guide does not extend the radius to fill ten castle slots.
Can I reach a castle hotel without hiring a car?
Yes, with a planned final transfer. Melville identifies Eskbank as its rail gateway and warns there is no station taxi rank. Pre-book the taxi and the return. For Dalhousie and Carberry, ask the property to confirm the practical arrival point and transfer before buying a train ticket.
Does a castle-view room mean staying in a castle?
No. A Castle View category at 100 Princes Street, Apex Grassmarket, The Caledonian or the Sheraton refers to an outlook towards Edinburgh Castle. The Witchery is beside the Castle. Neither description means that the hotel bedroom is inside the fortress.
Should I book a castle hotel before an early flight?
Only after confirming pickup time, journey allowance, breakfast availability and any hire-car return. A special final night works better when you can arrive early enough to enjoy dinner and the house. If a very early departure dominates the plan, compare airport-side Norton House or a dedicated airport stay instead.
Is spa access included with a castle room?
Do not assume so. Current access, treatment availability and inclusions must be confirmed separately. Dalhousie’s former spa URL redirected to a recruitment page when checked; this neither proves closure nor establishes a bookable spa package. Norton House and the Sheraton are separately labelled spa-led alternatives.
Methodology
This is a researched shortlist of two castle stays and eight alternatives, not a claim that ten castle hotels exist within a guaranteed 30–40-minute drive. Dalhousie and Melville answer the main intent; the alternatives address mansion atmosphere, airport-side spa time, castle proximity and city-view rooms. Official room directories, hotel directions and transport resources inform the comparisons. We have not stayed, surveyed access or tested noise. Property photographs are credited individually and illustrate the buildings, not a guaranteed bedroom, outlook or facility entitlement.
