Quick answer
Choose the Sheraton Grand for a substantial thermal experience at One Spa, but book Escape at One separately and check current facility restrictions. The Caledonian and Kimpton Charlotte Square are clearer choices for included pool, sauna and steam-room access. The Balmoral suits a landmark hotel with Irene Forte treatments; Norton House suits an airport-side country-house retreat. Apex Waterloo Place, Radisson Blu and Marriott Holyrood combine sightseeing with pools and bookable treatments. W Edinburgh offers private Elements Suite sessions, while Gleneagles Townhouse offers wellness without a swimming pool.
All ten recommendations are researched from official published evidence, with no recorded BestUKHotels.com stay, spa treatment or access inspection. This guide distinguishes swimming pools, thermal circuits, private sessions and pool-free wellness. Hotel photographs are official property images credited to each hotel.
Hotels in Edinburgh
Ranked by the selection criteria for this guide. Check the exact room, terms and inclusions before booking.
Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa, Edinburgh
West End, Edinburgh- Best for
- Adults prioritising a shared thermal circuit and rooftop hydrotherapy alongside a West End city stay.
- Trade-off
- Ordinary pool access is a different entitlement from Escape at One
The clearest Edinburgh choice for a thermal spa as the main event, provided you reserve Escape at One rather than assuming a bedroom includes it. The rooftop hydropool and separate swimming pool serve different purposes.
Booking tipChoose a Castle View Room, Edinburgh Castle Suite or Edinburgh Grand Suite; Executive Club alone does not establish a Castle outlook. Confirm spa access separately.
The Caledonian Edinburgh
LuxuryWest End, Edinburgh- Best for
- Spa breaks, families wanting a pool, West End plans, connecting rooms and travellers arriving through Haymarket.
- Trade-off
- No on-site self-parking or valet parking
A grand West End railway hotel with castle views, a serious spa and an indoor pool, well suited to families and longer city breaks.
Booking tipKeep with Castle View in the Premier or suite name. Two Queen Bed Premier Room with Castle View is published for four; King Premier without the view label is different.
The Balmoral
LuxuryNew Town, Edinburgh- Best for
- A first Edinburgh visit, rail arrivals, landmark luxury, spa time and families wanting a central full-service hotel.
- Trade-off
- Princes Street is busy and a castle-facing category can cost substantially more
Edinburgh’s landmark all-rounder: a full-service five-star hotel beside Waverley, with castle views, family rooms and a pool.
Booking tipBook Deluxe Castle View, Junior Suite Castle View, Castle View Suite or Family Castle View Suite; Old Town View is a separate category.
Kimpton Charlotte Square Hotel
LuxuryNew Town, Edinburgh- Best for
- Couples, spa weekends, business stays and travellers who prefer the quieter western New Town.
- Trade-off
- The hotel spans historic townhouses, so room layouts and routes vary
A stylish New Town spa hotel for travellers who want an indoor pool, Georgian-square atmosphere and a calmer West End base.
Booking tipRoom sizes and layouts vary across the connected townhouse buildings; choose the named category and confirm lift and pool access if important.
Norton House Hotel & Spa
Ingliston, Edinburgh- Best for
- A spa-led retreat near the airport with swimming, hydrotherapy and a country-house setting.
- Trade-off
- Outside the walkable city centre
The strongest country-house alternative in this Edinburgh shortlist for travellers who want pool and hydrotherapy time to occupy much of the stay. The Ingliston setting rewards an estate-focused break and costs convenience for repeated city-centre evenings.
Booking tipBook swim time, treatments and the transfer together. Ask whether arrival and departure access follows the group’s published 14:00-to-noon entitlement.
Apex Waterloo Place Hotel
Waterloo Place, Edinburgh- Best for
- Rail arrivals and short city breaks with a swim, sauna or booked ESPA treatment.
- Trade-off
- Published facilities do not establish the precise access entitlement of every rate
A practical central spa choice for travellers who want Yu Spa treatments and a pool around sightseeing rather than an elaborate thermal day. Waterloo Place keeps eastern New Town and rail arrival plans close together.
Booking tipConfirm Yu Spa access for the exact rate and reserve treatments; check the Waterloo Place road-works notice before arranging a taxi.
Radisson Blu Hotel, Edinburgh City Centre
Royal Mile, Edinburgh- Best for
- Old Town sightseeing with included health-club use and optional Elemis treatments.
- Trade-off
- The indoor pool is promoted for families
A sensible Royal Mile base for travellers who want included swimming and heat facilities without moving sightseeing out of Old Town. Sleeping Beauty treatments are an additional booking, and the family-oriented pool is a different atmosphere from an adult thermal retreat.
Booking tipCompare room rates on the basis of included health-club access; add treatments separately and read their cancellation terms.
Edinburgh Marriott Hotel Holyrood
Holyrood, Edinburgh- Best for
- Holyrood and lower Royal Mile plans with swimming and a separately reserved treatment.
- Trade-off
- The pool and a spa appointment are separate booking benefits
A useful eastern Old Town hotel when a pool and bookable treatment should support a Holyrood itinerary. Its strongest reason to stay is the combination of that location and wellness facilities, rather than a sprawling thermal circuit.
Booking tipReserve the treatment separately and ask which heat facilities and pool sessions are available on your dates.
W Edinburgh
St James Quarter, Edinburgh- Best for
- Couples or friends seeking privacy and treatments alongside a St James Quarter city stay.
- Trade-off
- Private spa time must be booked rather than assumed
The distinctive choice for a private booked spa session in the city centre. AWAY Spa’s Elements Suite supplies sauna, jacuzzi and an experience shower for exclusive use, so compare the session entitlement rather than expecting a communal pool with every room.
Booking tipBook the Elements Suite explicitly or a qualifying Stay and Spa package, and establish whether the price includes a treatment as well as private facilities.
Gleneagles Townhouse
LuxuryNew Town, Edinburgh- Best for
- Couples, design-minded city breaks, St Andrew Square dining and travellers who prefer an intimate luxury hotel.
- Trade-off
- No on-site or valet parking
A polished 33-room New Town hotel for travellers who want Georgian character, a social club mood and a guest-only rooftop bar.
Booking tipNook rooms are intentionally compact and attic-like; compare the named category, outlook and bath preference before booking.
Choose by your priorities
If you want the spa to be the main event
Start with Sheraton’s Escape at One for shared thermal facilities, subject to the current operational notice; Norton House is the country-house alternative.
If you want straightforward included pool and heat facilities
Choose The Caledonian for pool, whirlpool, sauna and steam-room access included with a stay; book ishga treatments separately.
If you want a private spa session for two
Book W Edinburgh’s Elements Suite explicitly. It contains a sauna, jacuzzi and experience shower; confirm the session length and treatment inclusion.
If you want Old Town sightseeing before a swim
Choose Radisson Blu on the Royal Mile; its pool, sauna, steam room and gym are included for residents. Treatments are extra.
If you want classes and treatments rather than swimming
Gleneagles Townhouse offers the Strong Rooms wellness space. Confirm charges for your chosen treatment, class or cryotherapy appointment.
Choose the spa experience before the bedroom
Edinburgh’s spa hotels solve different trips. A rooftop hydropool session, a swim after the Royal Mile and a private sauna booking are not interchangeable. Decide whether you want to spend most of an afternoon in the spa or simply add a treatment to a city break. Then compare the exact facilities and time entitlement attached to the room rate.
For a shared thermal experience, start with Sheraton Grand. For clearly included leisure access, compare The Caledonian, Kimpton Charlotte Square and Radisson Blu. W Edinburgh is the private-session option; Gleneagles Townhouse is for guests who do not need a swimming pool. Norton House trades central walking convenience for a country-house retreat near the airport.
This shortlist sits alongside our Edinburgh hotel guide and where to stay in Edinburgh. The ranking reflects those different booking needs, rather than pretending every spa can deliver the same experience.
Pools, treatments and resident access at a glance
| Hotel | Pool and heat offer | Resident inclusion | What to book or check separately |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sheraton Grand | 19m pool; rooftop hydropool and thermal suite | Main pool, poolside sauna and gym | Escape at One entitlement, treatments and current works |
| The Caledonian | Pool, whirlpool, sauna and steam room | Leisure facilities included | Ishga treatments; child swim windows |
| The Balmoral | Indoor lap pool, sauna and steam room | Exact rate entitlement needs confirmation | Irene Forte treatments and arrival/departure access |
| Kimpton Charlotte Square | 12m pool, sauna and steam room | Leisure facilities included | Treatments, Swell Room and current child timetable |
| Norton House | Swimming and hydrotherapy pools, sauna and steam | Resident access under group guidance | Swim booking, treatments and local access hours |
| Apex Waterloo Place | Pool, sauna and steam room | Confirm selected rate entitlement | ESPA appointment and access terms |
| Radisson Blu | Indoor pool, sauna and steam room | Health-club access included | Sleeping Beauty treatments; family pool atmosphere |
| Marriott Holyrood | 14m heated pool and spa | Pool and gym listed as included | Treatments, heat facilities and age windows |
| W Edinburgh | Private jacuzzi, sauna and experience shower | Private suite requires explicit booking | Elements Suite session and treatment inclusion |
| Gleneagles Townhouse | Infrared sauna, cryotherapy and wellness studios; no pool | Guest access to wellness spaces | Charges and slots for each chosen service |
Treatments are additional unless the named package explicitly includes them. A jacuzzi is not a swimming pool; an included swimming pool is not proof that a thermal suite is included.
The 10 recommended Edinburgh spa hotels
1. Sheraton Grand — for a shared thermal spa
Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa makes the strongest case when spa time drives the trip. One Spa separates its 19-metre swimming pool from Escape at One, the rooftop hydropool and thermal experience. The ordinary room entitlement includes the main pool, poolside sauna and gym; it should not be priced as an unrestricted rooftop-spa stay.
There is a current booking caveat. At our research date the official One Spa notice reported limited midweek thermal access during enhancement work, with the hydropool, swimming pool and selected heat experiences remaining open. Confirm the actual operational list and session entitlement directly before committing. Do not rely on an older brochure or assume a treatment automatically includes Escape at One.
Festival Square suits a West End break. Choose it for planned spa sessions with sightseeing around them, rather than the closest possible Royal Mile doorstep.
2. The Caledonian — for included leisure facilities
The Caledonian Edinburgh has one of the clearest resident propositions: leisure access is included with the stay. Its indoor pool, whirlpool, sauna and steam room offer a useful mix without requiring the separate thermal-session decision at Sheraton.
Ishga massages and facials are an additional booking. This is a good choice when both guests want facilities but only one wants a treatment: compare the room and appointment separately. The West End location also makes sense for a city break with evenings outside the hotel.
Children aged 11 and under have published swimming windows. That makes family use possible, but does not create an unrestricted family spa. Ask which periods remain quiet for adults and confirm the timetable for the stay.
3. The Balmoral — for landmark luxury and Irene Forte treatments
The Balmoral combines its Princes Street position beside Waverley with the current Irene Forte Spa. Documented facilities include an indoor lap pool, sauna, steam room and treatment rooms. The treatment-led proposition is a reason to choose it over a hotel where wellness means only a leisure club.
Its current spa page establishes what exists, but does not settle every room rate’s resident entitlement. Ask the hotel to spell out pool and heat access, permitted hours and any arrival or departure use in the reservation. Keep the treatment appointment separate in the cost comparison unless the package names it.
Choose The Balmoral when the hotel and central sightseeing both matter. Choose Sheraton when thermal variety dominates the decision, or The Caledonian when published inclusion is the priority.
4. Kimpton Charlotte Square — for a New Town pool-and-treatment break
Kimpton Charlotte Square combines a 12-metre pool, sauna and steam room with treatments in a Georgian-square setting. IHG’s current wellness information states that resident leisure use is complimentary. The separate Swell Room and treatment packages require their own inclusion checks.
The main booking trap is relying on old timings. The current spa terms list under-16 swimming at 08:00–09:00, 12:00–13:00 and 16:00–17:00, unlike the older brochure. Confirm these windows if you are planning childcare or a quiet swim around a treatment.
This is a persuasive choice for a couple wanting a pool and city dining rather than a full-day thermal circuit. Because the hotel spans historic buildings, request the exact bedroom-to-spa route if access is important.
5. Norton House — for a country-house spa retreat
Norton House Hotel & Spa is the retreat alternative at Ingliston, near the airport. A swimming pool and separate hydrotherapy pool, sauna and steam room give it a broader water-based offer than a small city hotel pool.
Hand Picked’s group guidance gives residents health-club and spa access from 14:00 on arrival day until noon on departure day. Norton’s guest directory also asks guests to book swim time in advance. Confirm those local arrangements and reserve treatments separately; included access should not be mistaken for guaranteed walk-in capacity.
The compromise is geography. Plan transport for central dinners and sightseeing rather than making repeated trips an afterthought. The hotel publishes a scheduled connection to Ingliston Park & Ride, but confirm it fits your plans. Its accessibility page describes a pool hoist requiring advance notice; discuss assistance and the full route directly.
6. Apex Waterloo Place — for a compact spa city break
Apex Waterloo Place Hotel puts Yu Spa’s pool, sauna, steam room and ESPA treatments close to eastern New Town sightseeing and Waverley arrivals. It is a useful option for guests who want an hour of facilities around a fuller city itinerary.
The official facilities page describes the offer without establishing every rate’s access terms. Ask which pool and heat facilities are included, whether sessions need reserving and what a treatment booking adds. Do not compare a spa-day voucher with an overnight room as though both have the same entitlement.
The hotel currently flags Waterloo Place road works with an expected late-November completion, while pedestrian access remains open. Check the latest notice when arranging a taxi or luggage drop-off. This is a practical arrival consideration, not a reason to rule out a walkable central stay.
7. Radisson Blu — for Royal Mile sightseeing with included swimming
Radisson Blu Hotel, Edinburgh City Centre is the clearest Old Town option when included leisure facilities matter. Its health club covers the indoor pool, gym, sauna and steam room for residents throughout their stay. Sleeping Beauty Spa offers separately bookable treatments, including Elemis face and body options.
The hotel explicitly promotes the pool for families. That is useful for mixed-age stays but a meaningful compromise for someone picturing a silent adult retreat. Confirm the quieter periods rather than assuming that a spa label means adults-only use.
Its Royal Mile address earns its place: you can choose the sightseeing location first and still retain a swimming option. It is a stronger fit for that itinerary than for a dedicated day of hydrotherapy.
8. Edinburgh Marriott Hotel Holyrood — for the eastern Old Town
Edinburgh Marriott Hotel Holyrood offers a 14-metre heated indoor pool and the Holyrood Spa with Elemis treatments. Marriott lists the pool and fitness centre as included facilities, while spa appointments are booked separately.
This is the useful counterpart to Radisson: choose it when Holyrood Road and the lower Royal Mile fit more of the itinerary. A convenient spa on the wrong side of the city is less valuable if every evening involves returning from somewhere else.
Ask for the current heat-facility list, pool restrictions and treatment availability before booking. The evidence supports a pool-and-treatment stay; it does not justify promising a large thermal circuit or unrestricted access to every wellness service.
9. W Edinburgh — for an exclusively booked spa suite
W Edinburgh is the private-spa option. AWAY Spa’s Elements Suite combines a sauna, jacuzzi and experience shower, reserved exclusively for the booking. The hotel also offers massages, facials and body treatments by appointment.
Book the suite explicitly or a qualifying Stay and Spa offer. Then establish the time allowance, number of guests, whether the booking contains a treatment and what cancellation terms apply. The Elements Suite is a spa facility, not a description of every bedroom or a promise of a private sauna in your accommodation.
Choose it when privacy matters more than swimming lengths or an extensive shared circuit. Its St James Square location keeps the stay central, but a jacuzzi session cannot substitute for a swimming pool if that is the essential requirement.
10. Gleneagles Townhouse — for wellness without swimming
Gleneagles Townhouse earns the final place as an explicitly pool-free alternative. The Strong Rooms wellness space offers an infrared sauna, cryotherapy, treatments and bookable classes for hotel guests and members. It suits someone who wants a class or appointment alongside an intimate New Town stay.
Guest access to wellness spaces does not establish that every treatment or cryotherapy session is free. Ask for the specific service’s charge and slot before comparing the complete stay. This is also the Edinburgh Townhouse, not the Gleneagles country resort in Perthshire; photographs and facility descriptions for one should never be used to infer the other’s offer.
Choose it when swimming is expendable. If a pool is non-negotiable, shortlist The Balmoral, Kimpton or The Caledonian instead.
If the historic building matters more than the thermal circuit, compare our castle hotels near Edinburgh. It distinguishes castle bedrooms from country houses and city hotels; confirm any spa entitlement separately rather than assuming that a castle stay includes one.
Which area works best for a spa break?
West End and Charlotte Square suit travellers who want Sheraton, The Caledonian or Kimpton with city restaurants around the spa. Compare the final walking route from Haymarket or the West End tram stop. This is a strong practical cluster, but a spa afternoon can compete with a longer Royal Mile sightseeing day.
Eastern New Town, St Andrew Square and Waterloo Place suit rail arrivals, shopping and central dining. The Balmoral, Gleneagles Townhouse, W and Apex provide different wellness models in this part of the centre. St Andrew Square is useful for the airport tram and Waverley, subject to service updates; the final walk still matters with luggage.
Royal Mile and Holyrood favour sightseeing-first stays at Radisson and Marriott Holyrood. Choose the end of Old Town you expect to use repeatedly. Map gradients, crossings and the complete luggage route instead of relying on a straight-line distance.
Ingliston makes sense when Norton House itself is the destination or an airport arrival shapes the break. It is not a walk-out city-centre base. Check the scheduled Park & Ride connection and arrange a return after any late dinner before deciding that the rural setting outweighs the transfer.
If sightseeing is the priority and swimming is the extra, compare our Old Town hotels near the Royal Mile before choosing how much of the stay to organise around a spa.
What should the booking actually include?
Compare the total stay with the same benefits in each column: bedroom, breakfast, facility access, treatment, meals and travel. Do not rank value using the headline room price alone. A lower room rate can become a different proposition after adding two thermal sessions; a spa package can include a short treatment that is not the appointment you wanted.
Write down the facilities by name. At Sheraton, ask specifically for Escape at One, not simply “spa access”. At W, ask for the Elements Suite with exclusive use and a confirmed duration. At Gleneagles Townhouse, identify the class, treatment or cryotherapy service. At the pool-focused hotels, ask whether sauna and steam facilities share the same entitlement and timetable as swimming.
For treatments, confirm the eligible menu, duration, therapist availability and separate cancellation deadline. Reserve room, spa session and appointment together when any one is essential. Leave time to change before dinner rather than scheduling a treatment to end exactly when a restaurant booking starts.
Edinburgh’s visitor levy is now part of the comparison. Eligible stays from 24 July 2026 attract 5% of the accommodation portion, capped at five consecutive nights; booking-date exceptions apply. Ask whether the quoted total includes the levy and how the accommodation element of a package is calculated. Do not apply 5% to the entire spa-and-dinner package without checking the breakdown.
Families, quiet time and accessibility
A hotel accepting children does not mean its thermal facilities accept them. One Spa requires a minimum age of 16 for the thermal suite and hydropool and publishes separate accompanied-swimming periods. The Caledonian and Kimpton also have child swim windows. Radisson promotes its pool for family use. Compare the Edinburgh family hotel guide if a child’s swimming opportunity matters more than adult thermal variety.
For access needs, establish the whole journey: entrance, bedroom, changing room, treatment bed, pool edge and entry into the water. A lift or an accessible bedroom does not settle independent pool access. Ask about a hoist, staff assistance, changing facilities and any advance-notice requirement. Norton House’s published hoist provision is useful evidence to discuss, not a substitute for confirming your specific needs.
Before paying: seven questions
- Which named facilities does this exact room and rate include?
- How many sessions, for how long, and must each be reserved?
- Does the entitlement cover arrival day and departure day?
- Which ages, swim windows and supervision rules apply to every guest?
- Is a treatment included, and which duration and menu qualify?
- Are any facilities closed, restricted or awaiting maintenance on the stay dates?
- What are the separate cancellation terms, total package cost and complete access arrangements?
For a two-night stay, reserve the essential spa session first and leave the other day’s sightseeing flexible. For one night, arrival and departure access can matter more than another heat room. The best choice is the hotel whose confirmed entitlement fits the time you will actually spend there.

Quick answers
Common questions about hotels in Edinburgh
Practical answers for comparing the shortlist before you book.
Which is the best spa hotel in Edinburgh?
Sheraton Grand is our first choice for a shared thermal spa because One Spa combines a rooftop hydropool with a separate swimming pool and heat experiences. That recommendation depends on booking Escape at One and confirming current facilities. The Caledonian is easier if included leisure access matters most; W Edinburgh is better for a private booked session.
Which Edinburgh spa hotels include access with the room?
The Caledonian, Kimpton Charlotte Square and Radisson Blu publish included resident leisure access. Marriott Holyrood lists its pool and gym as included. Sheraton includes the main swimming pool and gym, not automatic Escape at One access. Norton House publishes resident health-club access with advance swim booking. Ask Apex and The Balmoral to confirm the precise entitlement of your rate.
Does a Sheraton Edinburgh stay include the rooftop hydropool?
Do not assume so. The ordinary guestroom entitlement covers the swimming pool, poolside sauna and fitness centre. Escape at One is the separate thermal-suite and rooftop-hydropool experience. Obtain confirmation that your room or package includes it, then reserve the session and check current maintenance restrictions.
Which Edinburgh spa hotel has private facilities?
W Edinburgh offers the bookable AWAY Spa Elements Suite with private sauna, jacuzzi and experience shower. It is a spa appointment or package benefit, not a claim that every bedroom contains those facilities. Confirm the duration, exclusive use and whether a treatment is included.
Do all Edinburgh spa hotels have a swimming pool?
No. Gleneagles Townhouse is a wellness and treatment option without a swimming pool. W Edinburgh’s private jacuzzi is not a swimming pool. The other eight recommendations have documented indoor swimming facilities, but access rules, age windows and the atmosphere differ.
Can children use Edinburgh hotel spas?
Swimming and thermal access have different rules. The Caledonian restricts children aged 11 and under to published swim windows; Kimpton publishes separate under-16 pool windows. One Spa requires guests to be at least 16 for the thermal suite and hydropool, with parent or guardian accompaniment for ages 16–18. Ask about supervision, extra child charges and your exact dates.
Are massages and facials included in the room price?
Treatments should be treated as separately charged unless the exact package lists them. Check the number of treatments, their duration, which menu choices qualify and whether thermal access is bundled. A private suite booking can include facilities without including a therapist appointment.
Where should I stay for an Edinburgh spa break without a car?
New Town and the West End keep several spa choices near tram or rail arrival points. St Andrew Square supports The Balmoral, Gleneagles Townhouse and W; the West End supports The Caledonian, Kimpton and Sheraton. Radisson and Marriott Holyrood suit Old Town itineraries. Norton House requires a planned final transfer and is less convenient for repeated central evenings.
Methodology
Ten recommendations researched against official hotel, spa, transport and council pages on 9 October 2026. The order is an editorial fit assessment: shared thermal depth first, then included leisure facilities, location and distinct private or pool-free alternatives. It is not a measured quality score. We have not stayed, received treatments, inspected accessibility or tested facilities. Where official pages do not establish rate inclusion, we say so. One Spa’s indexed official works notice warrants direct confirmation; older Kimpton brochure timings are superseded by its current terms.
