Standards
Editorial policy
We research, compare and curate hotels and destinations with a focus on usefulness rather than publishing volume. Technology assists; human editors remain responsible.
How we work
BestUKHotels exists to help travellers make better decisions about where to stay in the UK.
We research, compare and curate hotels and destinations with a focus on usefulness rather than publishing volume. Every page is intended to answer a genuine travel decision, and every page is reviewed by a human editor before publication.
We use a combination of independent research, editorial judgement, structured data, specialist tools and artificial intelligence to support our work. Technology helps us research more efficiently; it does not replace human editorial responsibility.
Our editorial standard
We aim to publish fewer, more useful pages rather than create large numbers of pages simply to target search terms.
A page must have a clear reason to exist beyond attracting search traffic. It should help a traveller understand a destination, compare realistic accommodation choices or make a specific booking decision.
We do not intentionally publish pages that merely repeat the same information with different place names, traveller types, amenities or keyword variations.
Where two potential topics substantially overlap, we prefer to strengthen one authoritative guide rather than create multiple near-duplicate pages.
How we use AI
Artificial intelligence is used as an editorial and research tool at BestUKHotels.
Depending on the article, AI may assist us with tasks such as:
- organising research and identifying points that require verification;
- comparing information from multiple sources;
- structuring drafts and summarising source material;
- identifying possible omissions, inconsistencies or outdated information;
- improving clarity, grammar and readability; and
- supporting our editorial research process.
AI-generated output is not automatically published to BestUKHotels.
A human editor reviews the work before publication and remains responsible for the final page. This includes assessing whether recommendations are useful, checking important factual claims, reviewing the sources used, removing unsupported statements and deciding whether the page meets our editorial standards.
We do not treat an AI system as a source of fact. Where a factual claim matters to a traveller’s decision, we seek supporting evidence from an appropriate external source.
Human editorial responsibility
Technology can assist our research, but editorial decisions are made by people.
Before publication, an editor reviews the page for:
- factual accuracy;
- relevance to the traveller decision being addressed;
- quality and credibility of supporting sources;
- unsupported or overly confident claims;
- duplication with existing BestUKHotels content;
- misleading language or implied first-hand experience;
- commercial bias;
- clarity and usefulness; and
- whether the page adds sufficient value to deserve publication.
If an article does not meet that standard, it is revised or not published.
Sources and verification
Hotel information changes frequently. Facilities close, restaurants change, refurbishment takes place, transport connections change and hotel policies are updated.
For changeable facts, we favour authoritative and current sources wherever practical. These may include hotel websites, official tourism organisations, transport operators, government sources and other reputable first-party or specialist sources.
Secondary sources may provide additional context, but important factual claims should not depend solely on an unsourced summary or AI-generated response.
We record verification dates for hotel and destination information where appropriate so readers can understand when changeable facts were last checked.
A verification date does not mean that every aspect of a hotel will remain unchanged after that date.
Research-based recommendations
Not every hotel featured on BestUKHotels has been personally stayed in or visited by our editorial team.
We make that distinction clear.
Coverage may be based on:
- a personal stay;
- an in-person visit;
- contributor experience or verification; or
- editorial desk research.
We never invent personal experience.
If our assessment is based on research rather than a stay, we will not describe rooms as though we slept in them, claim that we personally experienced the service, or imply that we inspected a property when we did not.
Research-based recommendations are evaluated using available evidence such as location, transport access, hotel facilities, room configurations, property information, traveller suitability and other factors relevant to the guide.
Originality and useful analysis
Sources provide evidence. They do not replace our editorial judgement.
Our aim is not to reproduce hotel descriptions, tourism-board copy, booking-platform listings or information that can already be found elsewhere.
We use research to answer questions such as:
- Who is this hotel particularly suitable for?
- What trade-offs should a traveller understand?
- How practical is the location?
- Which nearby area might be a better choice?
- When is paying more worthwhile?
- Which properties solve distinctly different travel needs?
- What should a visitor know before booking?
Where there is not enough useful or reliable information to make a meaningful recommendation, we would rather leave a hotel out.
Hotel selection
A hotel is included because we believe it is relevant to the traveller decision covered by the guide.
We do not automatically include every hotel in a destination, every property available through an affiliate partner or every hotel matching a database filter.
Our guides are curated rather than comprehensive directories.
Selection may consider factors such as location, transport connections, property type, facilities, traveller suitability, distinctive strengths, practical drawbacks and how a hotel compares with alternatives.
Being included does not mean a hotel is perfect for every traveller.
Editorial independence and affiliate links
Our editorial judgement is not for sale.
Hotels are not ranked more favourably because they participate in an affiliate programme, pay a higher commission or provide a booking opportunity.
BestUKHotels may earn a commission when a reader follows certain booking links and completes a qualifying transaction. Where applicable, these commercial relationships are disclosed.
Affiliate relationships help fund the site but do not determine which hotels we recommend or what we say about them.
Sponsored content or paid commercial arrangements, if accepted in the future, must be clearly identified and kept distinguishable from independent editorial recommendations.
Bylines and authors
Published editorial guides should identify the person responsible for the work where appropriate.
Author profiles describe genuine people and their actual role in the editorial process. We do not invent biographies, photographs, travel experiences, professional credentials or areas of expertise.
Our authors may work with editors, research tools and AI-assisted workflows, but the named human editor or author remains accountable for the final published work.
You can learn more about the process on our How we review hotels page.
Page creation and publishing standards
We do not use automated systems to publish thousands of location, hotel, amenity or search-query pages.
In particular, we do not automatically generate:
- a separate page for every search keyword;
- a separate page for every hotel amenity;
- combinations of destination + traveller type + amenity simply because search demand exists;
- automatically generated tag archives intended primarily to rank in search;
- query-string hotel lists intended for indexing;
- near-identical city or destination pages with only names and keywords changed; or
- multiple URLs that answer substantially the same travel decision.
Our destination hierarchy is intentionally curated.
For example, the principal destination page should normally serve as the authoritative hotel guide for that location rather than being duplicated by another /best-hotels/ version of the same page.
New pages should add meaningful editorial value and fit naturally within the site’s UK travel coverage.
No placeholder or unfinished content
Pages intended for public discovery should be publication-ready.
Drafts, test content, incomplete templates and development fixtures should not be made indexable simply to increase the number of URLs on the site.
A page should only enter our public editorial catalogue once we believe it is sufficiently useful to a traveller.
Dates and freshness
For hotel and destination pages, a last verified date refers to an editorial check of information that may have changed.
It is not automatically updated because the website was rebuilt, a template changed or a software deployment occurred.
Different facts can change at different times, and readers should always confirm particularly important information — such as prices, accessibility requirements, parking arrangements, check-in policies and specific facilities — directly with the hotel before booking.
Prices and availability
Hotel rates and availability change continuously.
Unless explicitly stated otherwise, prices mentioned on BestUKHotels are illustrative context rather than guaranteed live rates.
Readers should confirm the final price, room conditions, cancellation terms, taxes and availability with the booking provider before completing a reservation.
Corrections
Accuracy matters to us, but travel information changes and mistakes can happen.
When we identify a material factual error, we correct it. Where appropriate, we also update the page’s verification information.
We do not silently preserve information that we know to be wrong simply because it previously ranked well or appeared in an earlier version of the page.
Our approach to corrections is explained in our Corrections policy.
What we will not do
We do not:
- invent hotel stays, inspections or personal experiences;
- fabricate reviews, quotations or traveller testimonials;
- invent hotel awards, ratings or credentials;
- present AI output as independently verified evidence;
- copy hotel or booking-site descriptions and pass them off as original editorial work;
- create large volumes of substantially similar pages solely to capture search traffic;
- alter editorial recommendations because one hotel pays a higher affiliate commission;
- publish misleading “last reviewed” dates generated automatically by software; or
- claim certainty where the available evidence does not support it.
Our goal
BestUKHotels is not intended to be the largest database of UK hotel pages.
Our goal is to become a useful, dependable editorial resource for travellers deciding where to stay, which hotel to choose and why.
AI and other tools can make our research more efficient. The value of the site, however, should come from the work that happens after that research: verification, comparison, judgement, editing and human accountability.
