Quick answer

Start with 100 Princes Street’s Executive Double - Castle View for a central townhouse stay, Apex Grassmarket’s Castle View Deluxe Room with Balcony for outdoor space, or The Balmoral’s Deluxe Castle View Room for a station-side landmark. For a larger party, Wilde lists Castle-view apartments for up to six. All ten recommendations have official evidence for named Castle-view accommodation. The hotel’s address, an Old Town View label or a request for a high floor does not secure that outlook: reserve the specific category and have it confirmed in writing.

Editorially researched from official sources; no stay, sightline inspection, noise test or accessibility audit is recorded.

Hotels in Edinburgh

Ranked by the selection criteria for this guide. Check the exact room, terms and inclusions before booking.

  1. 100 Princes Street

    LuxuryNew Town, Edinburgh
    Best for
Couples, solo travellers, celebrations and families prepared to book interleading rooms directly.
    Trade-off
Entry-level Single Rooms average 14 square metres

An intimate Princes Street townhouse with standout castle views, individual rooms and useful interleading options for larger parties.

Booking tipReserve Executive Double - Castle View, Junior Suite - Castle View, Isobel or Archibald; an ordinary Executive King or Terrace Suite is not a view guarantee.

  2. Apex Grassmarket Hotel

    Grassmarket, Edinburgh
    Best for
Travellers who want a private balcony with a documented Castle outlook and evenings around the Grassmarket.
    Trade-off
Grassmarket activity may matter to light sleepers; ask about the exact room’s exposure

The clearest Castle-view balcony choice in our shortlist: reserve the named view category, as a standard City Room is a different booking.

Booking tipChoose Castle View Superior or Castle View Deluxe Room with Balcony; City and Family are separate products.

  3. The Balmoral

    LuxuryNew Town, Edinburgh
    Best for
A first Edinburgh visit, rail arrivals, landmark luxury, spa time and families wanting a central full-service hotel.
    Trade-off
Princes Street is busy and a castle-facing category can cost substantially more

Edinburgh’s landmark all-rounder: a full-service five-star hotel beside Waverley, with castle views, family rooms and a pool.

Booking tipBook Deluxe Castle View, Junior Suite Castle View, Castle View Suite or Family Castle View Suite; Old Town View is a separate category.

  4. The Caledonian Edinburgh

    LuxuryWest End, Edinburgh
    Best for
Spa breaks, families wanting a pool, West End plans, connecting rooms and travellers arriving through Haymarket.
    Trade-off
No on-site self-parking or valet parking

A grand West End railway hotel with castle views, a serious spa and an indoor pool, well suited to families and longer city breaks.

Booking tipKeep with Castle View in the Premier or suite name. Two Queen Bed Premier Room with Castle View is published for four; King Premier without the view label is different.

  5. Apex City of Edinburgh Hotel

    Grassmarket, Edinburgh
    Best for
Friends, relatives or colleagues seeking a Castle View Twin Room, or couples wanting a separate living area in the Castle View Suite.
    Trade-off
The Twin description says two beds but its feature list says king-size: reconfirm the configuration

A useful pick for two travellers wanting separate beds and a named Castle view. Compare the Castle View Twin, King and Suite, not just the address.

Booking tipBook the full Castle View King, Twin or Suite name. For Twin, obtain written confirmation of two separate beds.

  6. Wilde Edinburgh Grassmarket

Grassmarket / King’s Stables Road, Edinburgh
    Best for
Families and groups wanting a kitchen and a Castle-view apartment, including a published six-person option.
    Trade-off
Some rooms are reached only by stairs; access must be confirmed for the named view apartment

The apartment-style choice when a Castle view must work for a larger party. Match the named view apartment to your group and check beds and servicing.

Booking tipReserve the apartment name containing Castle View and specify every guest; confirm bed allocation and stairs.

  7. Virgin Hotels Edinburgh

Victoria Street / Old Town, Edinburgh
    Best for
Couples seeking an Old Town design hotel with a specific Castle-view room or a larger Castle-view suite.
    Trade-off
The Chamber is 24 square metres; the view does not make it a large suite

A design-led Victoria Street option with two named Castle-view choices. Terrace and Balcony categories do not themselves establish the view.

Booking tipChoose Chamber King Castle View or Castle View King Suite; confirm an alternative arrival route if stairs are unsuitable.

  8. Best for
Adults prioritising a shared thermal circuit and rooftop hydrotherapy alongside a West End city stay.
    Trade-off
Ordinary pool access is a different entitlement from Escape at One

The clearest Edinburgh choice for a thermal spa as the main event, provided you reserve Escape at One rather than assuming a bedroom includes it. The rooftop hydropool and separate swimming pool serve different purposes.

Booking tipChoose a Castle View Room, Edinburgh Castle Suite or Edinburgh Grand Suite; Executive Club alone does not establish a Castle outlook. Confirm spa access separately.

  9. Best for
Two-person stays prioritising an explicit Castle outlook and central Princes Street position over a large bedroom.
    Trade-off
All three named Castle-view categories have a published two-person maximum

A clear Princes Street comparison: the official room matrix separates Castle-facing Classic, Superior and Deluxe rooms from non-view rooms.

Booking tipKeep Castle View in the complete Classic, Superior or Deluxe room name; the standard Classic categories are listed without it.

  10. Novotel Edinburgh Centre

Lauriston / south-west Old Town, Edinburgh
    Best for
Two adults seeking a named Castle-view room south of the Grassmarket and a hotel with an indoor pool.
    Trade-off
The named Castle-view category is published for up to two adults

A practical Lauriston base with a named Executive Room with Castle View published for up to two adults; family rooms are separate.

Booking tipReserve Executive Room with Castle View, not simply Executive. Confirm the sightline and any balcony directly.

Choose by your priorities

If you want a balcony with the Castle explicitly in view

Choose Apex Grassmarket’s Castle View Deluxe Room with Balcony. A balcony elsewhere in Edinburgh does not establish the same outlook.

If you need separate beds and a named view

Compare Apex City’s Castle View Twin Room, but ask it to resolve the contradiction between its two-bed narrative and king-size feature list before paying.

If you need space for more than two people

Start with Wilde’s named Castle-view apartments, then confirm capacity, bed allocation and stairs for the exact apartment.

If you want a grand hotel beside Waverley

Choose The Balmoral’s Deluxe Castle View Room or one of its named Castle-view suites; standard and Old Town View rooms are different.

Book the view, not just the address

Want to sleep inside a castle rather than look at one? Compare our castle hotels near Edinburgh for Dalhousie and Melville, with mansion and city alternatives clearly separated. A Castle-view bedroom in this city shortlist is a different booking.

Edinburgh hotels with Castle views sell a particular outlook, not simply proximity to the attraction. A hotel can sit below Castle Rock yet allocate you a rear-facing room; a Princes Street hotel can look towards another part of the city. Even an expensive suite can face away from the Castle. The useful question is which room category includes Edinburgh Castle in the purchased product?

This shortlist starts with that evidence. It then separates balcony space, beds, occupancy and location, because a couple’s view room is not automatically suitable for a family, and a panoramic lounge does not establish the view from your pillow. There is no universal winner: the most useful choice is the one combining a confirmed outlook with the way you will actually use Edinburgh.

This guide is desk research from official hotel and destination sources, not a record of a stay. Hotel photographs show each property but do not prove the outlook from the room you book.

For the wider city decision, compare our Edinburgh hotel guide and where to stay in Edinburgh.

Exact room categories to compare

These names were checked against official hotel sources on 9 October 2026. They establish the marketed room product, not availability for your dates or an independently inspected sightline. The selection below includes useful examples rather than every signature suite.

Hotel Castle-view category to look for Best reason to compare it Detail to confirm
100 Princes Street Executive Double - Castle View; Junior Suite - Castle View; Isobel or Archibald Signature Suite Central townhouse stay Ordinary Executive King and Terrace Suite names do not establish the same view
Apex Grassmarket Hotel Castle View Superior Room; Castle View Deluxe Room with Balcony Explicit balcony option Superior is 24 m²; balcony Deluxe is 28 m²; Family is a separate category
The Balmoral Deluxe Castle View Room; Junior Suite Castle View; Castle View Suite; Family Castle View Suite Station-side landmark Family Castle View Suite is listed for four; Old Town View is different
The Caledonian Edinburgh King or Queen Premier Room with Castle View; Two Queen Bed Premier Room with Castle View; Terrace Suite with Castle View West End grand-hotel stay Two-queen view category is listed for four; standard Premier is different
Apex City of Edinburgh Hotel Castle View King Room; Castle View Twin Room; Castle View Suite Separate-bed view option Twin narrative and bed feature list conflict; suite is 40 m²
Wilde Edinburgh Grassmarket Studio (Castle View); One-Bedroom Apartment (Castle View); One-Bedroom Apartment Twin (Castle View); Two-Bedroom Apartment (Castle View) Apartment space and kitchens Published capacities are two, four, four and six; some rooms require stairs
Virgin Hotels Edinburgh Chamber King Castle View; Castle View King Suite Victoria Street design hotel Chamber is 24 m²; Suite is 46 m²; Terrace and Balcony are different names
Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa Castle View King; Edinburgh Castle Suite; Edinburgh Grand Suite View plus a West End pool stay Executive Club requires a separate Castle-view upgrade; spa access needs its own check
Mount Royal Hotel Edinburgh Classic Room, Castle View, 1 Queen Bed; Superior Room, Castle View, 1 King Bed; Deluxe Room, Castle View, 1 King Bed Clear Princes Street room matrix Sizes are 20, 20 and 23 m², all with a two-person maximum
Novotel Edinburgh Centre Executive Room with Castle View Lauriston base with indoor pool From 30 m², up to two adults; ask about the historic-side-view and inconsistent balcony labels

Ten hotels and the booking choice behind each

1. 100 Princes Street: best for a central townhouse view

100 Princes Street makes the view part of an intimate central stay. The official room page names Executive Double - Castle View; the suite overview adds Junior Suite - Castle View and the Isobel and Archibald Signature Suites. Those are the useful starting points if seeing the Castle from your accommodation is the reason for choosing the hotel.

Do not shorten the category to “Executive” when comparing offers. Its ordinary Executive King is a different listing, and the name Terrace Suite does not itself establish a Castle outlook. For a special occasion, ask what you can see from the sleeping and sitting areas of the actual category, rather than treating a hotel-wide photograph as a floor plan. Compare our Edinburgh boutique hotels if the townhouse atmosphere matters as much as the window.

2. Apex Grassmarket Hotel: best for an explicit Castle-view balcony

Apex Grassmarket is the clearest balcony recommendation because the official category joins both requirements: Castle View Deluxe Room with Balcony. At a published 28 square metres, it adds outdoor space to a named Castle outlook. Castle View Superior Room, at 24 square metres, is the alternative when the view matters more than going outside.

The standard City and Family rooms are separate products. Choose the balcony because you expect to use it, then discuss the threshold, furniture and any weather-related restrictions. Grassmarket is attractive for evenings out, but a window facing a lively visitor area deserves a noise question. We have not tested soundproofing or established that a particular floor eliminates street activity.

3. The Balmoral: best for Castle views beside Waverley

The Balmoral is the useful rail-arrival landmark. Start with Deluxe Castle View Room, then compare Junior Suite Castle View and Castle View Suite if more space is important. The room inventory also lists Family Castle View Suite for four guests, making the view a specific family product rather than a hopeful request on an unrelated family category.

Its most important distinction is semantic: Old Town View is not Castle View. Those headings appear separately in the official inventory. Nor does a signature-suite name guarantee this particular landmark. Ask which outlook appears in the confirmation and whether any connecting arrangement preserves it for both bedrooms. Pay for extra living space only when that changes your stay, rather than assuming a more expensive category must offer the better Castle angle.

4. The Caledonian Edinburgh: best for a West End grand-hotel stay

The Caledonian lists King Premier Room with Castle View, Queen Premier Room with Castle View and Two Queen Bed Premier Room with Castle View separately from ordinary Premier rooms. The two-queen view room is published for four. Its suite inventory also includes Queen Junior Suite, King One Bedroom Suite and Terrace Suite categories explicitly suffixed with Castle View.

This is a useful choice when your plans favour the western end of the centre. Keep the complete category name when switching between booking channels: “Premier” alone drops the important distinction. For a connecting reservation, ask whether both rooms include the outlook or whether only one does. A terrace may justify a larger part of the budget for guests planning time at the hotel; it is less valuable if most daylight hours will be spent sightseeing.

5. Apex City of Edinburgh Hotel: best for a named twin option

Apex City of Edinburgh sells Castle View King Room, Castle View Twin Room and Castle View Suite. The Twin is the interesting option for two people who want separate beds without losing the named view. The 40-square-metre Suite adds a separate living area for travellers spending more time indoors.

There is a small but consequential inconsistency: the official Twin narrative describes two beds, while its feature list says king-size. Obtain written confirmation of two separate beds for the exact reservation. This is a reason to clarify the product, not a reason to invent a correction. Standard City, City Plus and Family rooms should be compared on their own merits; their labels do not establish the view featured here.

6. Wilde Edinburgh Grassmarket: best for Castle-view apartments

Wilde Edinburgh Grassmarket gives larger parties a useful route to the view. Its named Studio (Castle View) sleeps two; the One-Bedroom Apartment (Castle View) and One-Bedroom Apartment Twin (Castle View) are listed for four; Two-Bedroom Apartment (Castle View) is listed for six. Kitchens add flexibility for meals.

Choose the apartment format consciously. Published housekeeping is periodic, some rooms require stairs, and the accessible Studio is listed separately. Confirm the full bed allocation and a stair-free route if needed. An apartment suitable for six is not automatically six equivalent beds, and an accessible category elsewhere in the building does not establish an accessible Castle-view apartment. Avoid booking a plain Studio and treating the view as an informal allocation preference.

7. Virgin Hotels Edinburgh: best for a Victoria Street design stay

Virgin Hotels Edinburgh has two particularly clear options: Chamber King Castle View, published at 24 square metres, and Castle View King Suite, at 46 square metres. The comparison is therefore between a view room and a substantially larger suite, rather than between interchangeable marketing names.

The separate Chamber King Terrace and Chamber King Balcony categories should not be used as shortcuts to a Castle view. Outdoor space and the required landmark are two different features. Arrival also needs thought: the hotel’s suggested walk from Waverley uses stairs through Fleshmarket Close. Ask for an alternative route if those steps are unsuitable, and confirm whether an accessible Chamber can also supply the outlook. Victoria Street is a sightseeing-led choice, not a promise of a level station approach.

8. Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa: best for a view with a West End pool stay

The Sheraton Grand explicitly markets Castle View Rooms and Suites; its room imagery labels a Castle View King. The premium-room page names Edinburgh Castle Suite and the two-bedroom Edinburgh Grand Suite with Castle views. Within Executive Club rooms, the hotel describes upgrading for a Castle view, so Executive Club alone is insufficient.

Do not bundle the outlook, Club benefits and thermal-spa entitlement into one assumption. The room page describes resident swimming-pool access, while the exact spa product needs separate confirmation. Our Edinburgh spa hotel guide explains that distinction. Book this western base when hotel facilities will earn their place alongside the view; obtain the current category wording from reservations if the booking engine abbreviates it.

9. Mount Royal Hotel Edinburgh: best for a transparent Princes Street comparison

Mount Royal provides an unusually helpful official matrix with a Castle View yes/no column. It marks Classic Room, Castle View, 1 Queen Bed, Superior Room, Castle View, 1 King Bed and Deluxe Room, Castle View, 1 King Bed as view rooms. The first two are 20 square metres; Deluxe is 23. All three are published for two guests.

That makes space and bed type easier to compare without assuming the biggest label buys the biggest improvement. The non-view Classic rooms are explicitly distinct. A three-person requirement should not be squeezed into a two-person Castle-view product: ask about separate rooms or consider the larger-party options above. Check the actual window outlook and street exposure when choosing between otherwise similar central rooms.

10. Novotel Edinburgh Centre: best for a Lauriston alternative

Novotel Edinburgh Centre lists Executive Room with Castle View separately from ordinary Executive accommodation. The detailed description gives space from 30 square metres, a queen bed and a maximum of two adults. The hotel also publishes an indoor pool, giving you another reason to compare this southern base.

Two caveats matter. The hotel’s family-room range does not establish family occupancy in this particular view category. Also, the detailed view label says historic side view while generic page labels vary and mention a balcony. Treat the room name as evidence of a Castle-view product, but obtain confirmation of the angle and any outdoor space before paying. We have not inspected whether the Castle is visible from every position within the room.

Which area gives the right kind of stay?

The area comparisons below are editorial interpretations of the hotels’ locations and the destination’s street layout. They do not certify that every window has an unobstructed panorama.

Base Why choose it Hotels from this shortlist Trade-off
Princes Street Castle outlook across the Gardens, shopping and tram access 100 Princes Street, The Balmoral, Mount Royal Traffic and a room-specific view upgrade; the Castle entrance is across town rather than outside the door
West End / Festival Square Western plans and hotel facilities alongside a Castle-facing category The Caledonian, Sheraton Grand Less convenient if most evenings end in eastern Old Town
Grassmarket / King’s Stables Road Castle Rock setting and Old Town restaurants, bars and sightseeing Apex Grassmarket, Apex City, Wilde Lively evenings and an uphill route towards the Castle entrance
Victoria Street / Lauriston Royal Mile-focused sightseeing or a southern Old Town base Virgin Hotels, Novotel Gradients and steps need checking; the view angle differs from Princes Street

For a first visit without a car, choose the hotel by both arrival and evenings. Princes Street and West End are tram stops on the official airport route. That does not remove the final pavement crossings or the walk to a particular entrance. From Waverley, trace the actual exit-to-hotel route rather than trusting a straight-line distance.

For the Castle itself, remember that the entrance is on Castlehill. Sleeping beneath the rock in Grassmarket does not place you at the visitor entrance. Check the official Edinburgh Castle arrival guidance and choose a route appropriate to luggage or mobility needs.

For evening atmosphere, Grassmarket’s shops, bars and restaurants are an attraction in their own right, as described by Forever Edinburgh. That activity is also a reason for light sleepers to ask about exposure, glazing and nearby venues. We cannot rank noise from an untested window.

If the neighbourhood matters more than a particular outlook, compare our Edinburgh Old Town hotel shortlist for Royal Mile, Grassmarket and station-side options, including luggage and noise checks.

How to secure a Castle view before paying

  1. Keep the complete room name. It should specify Castle View or be a named suite whose official description explicitly includes Edinburgh Castle.
  2. Separate an entitlement from a request. Ask whether the view is part of the purchased category or subject to room allocation. A preference typed into a standard booking is weaker evidence.
  3. Ask about the usable sightline. Is it full, partial or side-on? Is it visible from the bed, chair or only beside a window? Are there obstructions or current works?
  4. Match every guest. Verify ages, maximum occupancy, beds, extra beds and connecting doors within the view product.
  5. Check access and noise together. An adapted bathroom, lift and quieter aspect may need a different room. Ask whether one room can satisfy all requirements.
  6. Read the final confirmation. Save the category, hotel reply, dates, payment terms and cancellation deadline. If the required category is unavailable, choose another date or property rather than relying on an upgrade.

A useful enquiry is: “Please confirm that this reservation includes an Edinburgh Castle view as part of the booked category, rather than as a request. Is the outlook full or partial, and can this room meet our stated bed and access requirements?” Send it before a non-refundable payment when the view is central to the trip.

Compare the full stay cost

Compare identical dates and room conditions, including breakfast, cancellation, parking and any separately sold facilities. A view upgrade should be evaluated as the difference between two complete stay totals, not a small nightly supplement detached from the rest of the booking.

Edinburgh’s visitor levy applies at 5% of the accommodation cost before VAT for the first five nights of eligible stays from 24 July 2026. Stays booked and paid for in part or full before 1 October 2025 are outside the rule; exemptions also exist. Confirm the total and collection arrangements using the council’s current levy guidance.

For event dates, use our Edinburgh festival hotel guide alongside the room comparison. A Castle view does not prove visibility into a performance venue or confer event admission. Cloud, rain, temporary works and the exact window position can also change how rewarding the outlook feels. The booking should secure the documented room product; weather remains outside that promise.

Quick answers

Common questions about hotels in Edinburgh

Practical answers for comparing the shortlist before you book.

Do all hotels near Edinburgh Castle have Castle views?

No. Proximity describes the address, not the bedroom outlook. Rooms may face another street, a courtyard or another part of the skyline. Book the exact named Castle-view category; an optional request on a standard reservation may remain subject to availability.

Which Edinburgh hotel has a Castle-view balcony?

Apex Grassmarket explicitly lists Castle View Deluxe Room with Balcony. The Caledonian also lists a Terrace Suite with Castle View. Check usable outdoor space, access, weather restrictions and the confirmed category; city-view balconies and generic Terrace rooms elsewhere are different.

Can a family book a Castle-view room?

Yes, with the right category. The Caledonian lists Two Queen Bed Premier Room with Castle View for four; The Balmoral lists Family Castle View Suite for four; Wilde lists Castle-view apartments for four or six. Confirm every guest’s age, bed allocation and any extra-bed rules. Novotel’s Castle-view Executive category is published for two adults.

Does Old Town View mean Edinburgh Castle View?

No. At The Balmoral, Old Town View and Castle View are explicitly different categories. City View, landmark view and skyline view are also insufficient unless the actual room description and confirmation specify Edinburgh Castle.

Is a Castle-view room guaranteed if I request a high floor?

A high-floor or Castle-view request is not the same as reserving an explicitly sold view category. Ask the hotel to confirm whether the outlook forms part of the purchased room product or is merely an allocation preference. Keep the room name and hotel reply with your booking.

Which is better for Castle views: Princes Street or Grassmarket?

Choose Princes Street for the outlook across the Gardens and New Town transport; choose Grassmarket for being beneath Castle Rock and Old Town evenings. Neither area guarantees a view from every room. Compare the confirmed category, window position, noise exposure and walking route.

Are Castle-view rooms suitable for wheelchair users?

It depends on the actual room. A hotel may offer both accessible bedrooms and Castle-view bedrooms without a room combining them. Ask for the complete pavement-to-room route, bathroom measurements, window visibility from a seated position and any terrace threshold.

Can I watch the Edinburgh Tattoo from a Castle-view hotel room?

Do not assume it. A view of Castle walls does not prove a sightline into the Esplanade performance space, or an entitlement to attend. If watching a performance is the purpose, obtain explicit confirmation for that exact room and event; otherwise book official event tickets separately.

Methodology

Ten properties selected through official hotel room inventories and destination sources checked on 9 October 2026. The room names in the comparison are examples supported by those sources, not an exhaustive inventory or a live availability search. The order reflects clarity of the view proposition and different trip needs rather than an independently measured best window. We have not stayed, inspected sightlines, tested noise or audited accessibility. Where a room page contains conflicting generic labels, we identify the uncertainty and ask readers to confirm the precise product. Hotel photographs are official property images credited to each hotel; they illustrate the property and are not proof of the view from any specific room.
