Quick answer
Portree is our easiest first base: compare Cuillin Hills for a bay-facing hotel setting, The Bosville for central evenings and Marmalade for a position above town. Choose Uig Hotel for an Outer Hebrides ferry, Flodigarry for northern scenery, Kinloch Lodge or Duisdale for a food-led Sleat stay, Toravaig for a smaller southern hotel, and Broadford Hotel or Dunollie for bridge-arrival convenience. Book summer rooms, ferries and dinner ahead.
This is a selective road-trip shortlist based on desk research, not a live-price ranking or a claim of personal stays. Hotel photographs are credited to the properties themselves.
Choose the base before the hotel. Skye Bridge arrivals favour Broadford for the shortest initial island transfer; Portree balances town evenings and touring; Uig and Flodigarry keep a northern itinerary close; Sleat suits an Armadale arrival or a dinner-led southern stay. Repeated journeys matter more than a room’s position on a list.
Quick picks: best Isle of Skye hotels
Ranked for distinct trip types rather than a single definition of “best”. Check the trade-offs and exact room category before booking.
Cuillin Hills Hotel
Portree- Best for
- A first Skye road trip with hotel dining and a quieter return after sightseeing.
- Trade-off
- An outskirts address rather than a central street
A Portree-edge stay for travellers who want bay-facing grounds and a restaurant rather than a room above the town centre. It balances access to the northern touring routes with an evening at the hotel; confirm the room outlook instead of assuming every category has the same view.
Booking tipAn outskirts address rather than a central street
The Bosville
Portree- Best for
- Travellers who value a central town address and an on-site restaurant and bar.
- Trade-off
- A lively town setting rather than an isolated retreat
Choose The Bosville for central Portree evenings: the Dulse & Brose restaurant and Merchant Bar sit within the hotel, and the town is the point of the stay. This is a different proposition from a secluded country house. Compare room size and outlook, then settle the parking plan before arriving with luggage.
Booking tipA lively town setting rather than an isolated retreat
Marmalade Hotel
Portree- Best for
- A Portree base with a restaurant and separation from the central streets.
- Trade-off
- The return from town involves its hillside setting
Marmalade is the Portree alternative for travellers who prefer a manor-house setting above the town to a central terrace. The Chargrill restaurant makes an evening at the hotel possible. Its elevated position is part of the appeal, but the walk back and assigned room category matter more than a general promise of views.
Booking tipThe return from town involves its hillside setting
Uig Hotel
Trotternish and Uig- Best for
- An Uig ferry departure combined with northern Skye touring.
- Trade-off
- Lodge rooms are reached up an incline
Uig Hotel is the practical north-west pick when a ferry onward to the Outer Hebrides shapes the trip. It sits above Uig Bay rather than at the terminal. The main hotel and rear lodge are different accommodation choices; the lodge approach is uphill, so ask which building you are booking before treating the location as effortless.
Booking tipLodge rooms are reached up an incline
Flodigarry Hotel
Trotternish and Uig, Flodigarry- Best for
- A northern landscape itinerary with dinner at the accommodation.
- Trade-off
- A northern position adds travel to southern itineraries
Flodigarry suits a deliberate northern stay, with a Victorian house and dining at the foot of the Quiraing. The hotel and Flora MacDonald’s Cottage make building choice worth checking. It rewards travellers who want to finish their day in this part of Trotternish, rather than drive back from Portree for every northern outing.
Booking tipA northern position adds travel to southern itineraries
Kinloch Lodge
Sleat, Isle of Skye- Best for
- Food-led stays, special occasions and a quiet Skye setting.
- Trade-off
- The final road journey needs planning
A characterful, food-led Skye stay for special occasions in a remote lochside setting.
Booking tipPlan the Skye road journey and dinner reservation together.
Duisdale House Hotel
Sleat and the south- Best for
- A food-led southern break with a choice of accommodation styles.
- Trade-off
- Room, lodge and cottage products differ
Duisdale is the southern country-house choice when the accommodation and dinner deserve time in the itinerary. The operator offers rooms, lodges, suites and a cottage, so compare the product rather than treating the name as one uniform room type. It fits a Sleat stay much better than repeated early starts for northern Trotternish.
Booking tipRoom, lodge and cottage products differ
Toravaig House Hotel
Sleat and the south- Best for
- A small Sleat stay with the distillery as part of the itinerary.
- Trade-off
- All-day dining differs from a formal dinner proposition
Toravaig is a small southern hotel beside Torabhaig Distillery, with an intimate lounge-and-terrace proposition rather than a large resort. Choose it for a slower Sleat itinerary or a southern arrival. Its all-day food offer should be checked against your dinner expectations; do not infer Duisdale’s restaurant experience from shared ownership.
Booking tipAll-day dining differs from a formal dinner proposition
Broadford Hotel
Broadford- Best for
- A bridge-arrival or departure night with hotel dining and a private car park.
- Trade-off
- Northern touring adds driving
Broadford Hotel works as a southern gateway stay when the first or last drive matters more than sleeping near the north loop. Its Drambuie association gives the hotel a specific identity, while the restaurant and Gabbro Bar support an evening locally. Treat Broadford as a conscious base choice, not a substitute Portree address.
Booking tipNorthern touring adds driving
Dunollie Hotel
Broadford- Best for
- A Broadford Bay stay with on-site dining before or after a mainland drive.
- Trade-off
- Complimentary on-site parking has very limited spaces
Dunollie is the bay-facing Broadford alternative for travellers who want a restaurant and lounge at their southern base. It makes sense when arrival over the bridge or the onward mainland drive sets the rhythm. The parking limitation is important: an on-site car park does not guarantee an available space when you return late.
Booking tipComplimentary on-site parking has very limited spaces
Portree hotels: the easiest first base
For a first visit, start by comparing Portree. Our editorial preference is to keep the evening simple: after a day touring, a town base offers a clearer choice between eating at the hotel and heading into the centre. The three picks solve different needs. The Bosville puts the town at the centre of the stay; Cuillin Hills trades a central street for grounds overlooking the bay; Marmalade sits above the centre with its own restaurant. None should be booked on the assumption that every room has the same outlook.
For US road-trippers, check the final arrival route before setting off from the mainland. Cuillin Hills warns that satnav may choose Mallaig and a ferry to Armadale. Decide whether you intend to cross the bridge or take the ferry, then check the complete route. A suggested ferry is a reservation and timetable decision, not simply another road junction.
Portree does not remove the need to plan parking. Cuillin Hills advertises private parking with direct bookings; The Bosville and Marmalade parking arrangements should be confirmed for your dates. Ask where you can unload, where the car stays overnight and whether a late return changes access. Do not assume that a central address includes a reserved space.
Trotternish and Uig: for the north loop and ferries
Choose a northern base when the itinerary repeatedly returns to Trotternish. Uig Hotel is the more obvious match for an onward Outer Hebrides sailing; Flodigarry is the landscape-led choice at the foot of the Quiraing. They occupy different sides of the northern peninsula. Pick the side that fits tomorrow’s first journey rather than treating an Uig postcode and a Flodigarry address as interchangeable.
Uig Hotel describes its position as five minutes from the terminal. That is only the local transfer: add the ferry operator’s check-in requirement and time to load the car. A lodge room is behind the main hotel up an incline, which matters when carrying bags or requesting easier access. Flodigarry has accommodation in more than one building, so establish whether your room is in the main house or cottage.
A northern hotel is a commitment to northern evenings. Reserve the hotel meal or another dinner plan before heading out, and avoid using the final hour of the day to improvise an island-wide drive. For a short stay, we would keep the north loop and its walks together on one full day; weather and road conditions should decide how much you attempt.
Sleat and the south: for the Armadale ferry
Sleat fits travellers arriving at Armadale, those deliberately slowing the trip down, and stays where the hotel dinner is part of the reason to come. Kinloch Lodge is the lochside food-led option. Duisdale offers a wider choice of rooms, lodges, suites and cottage accommodation. Toravaig is the smaller hotel beside Torabhaig Distillery, with an all-day food offer. Compare dinner arrangements as carefully as bedrooms: shared ownership does not make two hotels identical.
The Mallaig–Armadale ferry needs an advance booking and a check of the current service status. A hotel reservation is not a ferry reservation. When joining Skye to a longer mainland road trip, make the arrival crossing, vehicle booking and hotel cancellation terms work together. Keep the Skye Bridge route in mind as an alternative to investigate if the ferry plan changes; it is a different road journey, not a nearby substitute.
Sonas publishes free on-site parking at Duisdale and Toravaig, but says neither has on-site electric charging. Confirm a charging plan independently if hiring an EV. For any southern hotel, map the places you intend to revisit in the north before choosing it for the whole stay. A relaxing dinner base can become an inconvenient touring base when the route is repeated daily.
Broadford: for arriving over the Skye Bridge
Broadford is our gateway choice for travellers who want to reduce the final island transfer on arrival or put themselves nearer the mainland journey on departure. Broadford Hotel has the more individual Drambuie-led hotel identity and a private car park; Dunollie offers a bay-facing setting, restaurant and lounge. Both make sense because of their southern position, rather than as the shortest base for every northern attraction.
The parking distinction is material. Broadford Hotel lists parking among the inclusions for direct accommodation bookings, with breakfast depending on the tariff or booking channel. Dunollie describes complimentary on-site spaces as very limited, with luggage unloading at the front and public parking nearby. Ask for its overflow arrangements before arriving after a long drive.
For a three-night island stay, one gateway night and two northern nights can be useful if the mainland route would otherwise force an awkward late arrival. It also costs a packing and check-in cycle. For only two nights, we would normally keep one base and choose a smaller sightseeing area. These are itinerary suggestions, not a promise that a particular hotel has rooms available.
Luxury and restaurant-with-rooms stays
Treat luxury as a question about the experience you want to buy. For a food-led southern stay, compare Kinloch Lodge and Duisdale, then reserve dinner separately and check what the package actually includes. For a Portree stay with a view-led setting and hotel dinner, compare Cuillin Hills. The Bosville and Marmalade make more sense when you want Portree to remain part of the evening. We have not ranked these hotels by live price or copied guest scores.
A restaurant-with-rooms trip works best when dinner and the bedroom solve the same problem. Check dining days, last orders, the menu format and whether the chosen rate includes food. Toravaig’s advertised all-day menu is a different offer from Duisdale’s restaurant. A room booking alone should never be read as a confirmed dinner table.
Kinloch Lodge’s current FAQ announces a transfer from the Macdonald family to the Wickman family and says existing reservations will be honoured. We retain its established hotel entry and URL rather than creating a duplicate property. This guide is based on desk research, not a stay, restaurant visit or accessibility inspection.
Driving times: plan the transfer, then add a margin
The local community visitor site skye.scot gives these minimum planning times: Skye Bridge to Broadford about 15 minutes; bridge to Portree about 55 minutes; Broadford to Armadale about 25 minutes; Portree to Uig ferry about 20 minutes; and Armadale to Uig ferry about 1 hour 20 minutes. These are published orientation estimates, not live traffic calculations or guaranteed arrival times.
Cuillin Hills gives a shorter estimate of roughly 45 minutes from the bridge to its hotel, illustrating why a single exact number is unhelpful. For a Portree arrival, use the community’s longer minimum as an orientation aid and add time for traffic, stops and finding the entrance. For a ferry departure, add the operator’s check-in requirement on top of the drive, rather than subtracting it from the margin.
Build each full day around one part of the island. Keep fuel topped up, use designated parking and learn how passing places work before driving single-track roads. A saved map can help with orientation, but neither a saved route nor a satnav estimate knows how long your walk, photo stops or a queue will take. Avoid fitting a northern walk, a western sunset and a southern dinner into a timetable with no spare time.
When to book a Skye hotel
For summer, start comparing hotels as soon as the dates of the wider Scotland trip are fixed. Skye is busy and the local visitor guidance advises booking accommodation, ferries and special restaurant plans ahead. Early comparison gives you a better chance of choosing the base and room you actually want. We do not promise availability, publish a countdown to sell-out or claim a particular month is always cheapest.
Book the accommodation and transport as a connected plan. First choose the base; then check a room for the correct number of guests, parking, meals and cancellation terms; then secure any ferry and dinner reservations. Keep a written note of the separate cancellation deadlines. A flexible bedroom rate is less helpful if the rest of the itinerary locks you into a crossing or dinner you cannot move.
Outside summer, verify opening dates and food service rather than assuming a quieter island means every hotel or restaurant operates daily. A short trip benefits from one weather-flexible full day between arrival and departure. Three nights can make room for a northern day and a southern or western day without changing hotel, but the best duration depends on the rest of your road trip.

Choose for the journeys you will repeat, especially the trip back after dinner or a show.
Portree
- Best for
- A first base, town evenings and a choice between central streets and a hotel above the bay.
- Trade-off
- Confirm parking and the walk back; an elevated hotel and a central terrace offer different evenings.
- Journey check
- Bridge to Portree: local guidance gives about 55 minutes minimum, before stops and delays.
Trotternish and Uig
- Best for
- Northern touring or an onward ferry from Uig.
- Trade-off
- Uig and Flodigarry sit on different sides of the northern peninsula; neither is a southern gateway.
- Journey check
- Portree to Uig ferry: about 20 minutes minimum in local guidance; add ferry check-in time.
Sleat and the south
- Best for
- An Armadale arrival, dinner-led stays and a slower southern itinerary.
- Trade-off
- A poor match for daily returns from northern Skye; confirm dinner format and EV charging.
- Journey check
- Broadford to Armadale: about 25 minutes minimum in local guidance; hotel-specific transfers vary.

Isle of Skye hotel booking guide
Four checks that matter more in the Isle of Skye than chasing a generic “best rate”.
Summer: compare early
Once your dates are fixed, compare the base and exact room. Book the ferry and important dinners alongside the accommodation; do not rely on finding a suitable room after arrival.
Choose the arrival route
Check whether satnav uses the Skye Bridge or Mallaig–Armadale ferry. A ferry route needs a booking, a current timetable and its own check-in margin.
Settle parking before paying
Ask about unloading, overnight spaces, overflow parking and EV charging. On-site parking does not necessarily mean a reserved space.
Book a room, not just a hotel name
Confirm the building, view, bed arrangement, breakfast and dinner inclusions. Ask about the complete accessible route to the assigned bedroom.
How to choose
If you want one base for a first three-night visit
Start with Portree. The Bosville keeps town evenings central; Cuillin Hills and Marmalade make more sense when you prefer a hotel setting above or beside the bay.
If you will arrive late over the bridge or leave early for the mainland
Choose Broadford to simplify that travel day, then decide whether the added northern driving is acceptable for the rest of the stay.
If you want repeated northern outings and an Uig departure
Compare Uig Hotel with Flodigarry. Uig favours the ferry side; Flodigarry favours the northeastern landscape. Reserve the meal and verify the building.
If you want the southern hotel dinner to be part of the trip
Choose Sleat and compare Kinloch Lodge with Duisdale. Give southern sightseeing its own day rather than treating the hotel as a nightly return from the north.
If you are travelling without a car
Start with central Portree, then confirm the mainland connection, local return services or tour pickup before booking. An island arrival and an island sightseeing plan are separate tasks.

Quick answers
Common questions about hotels in the Isle of Skye
Where should I stay on Skye for a first visit?
Our first comparison is Portree for town evenings and a practical touring base. Compare the central Bosville, bay-facing Cuillin Hills and elevated Marmalade by parking and room category. A ferry-led trip or several days in the south can justify a different base.
Should I stay in Portree or Broadford?
Choose Portree when town evenings and northern touring shape most days. Choose Broadford when a bridge arrival, mainland departure or southern itinerary matters more. Local community guidance gives minimum drives of about 55 minutes from the bridge to Portree and 15 minutes to Broadford; add a margin.
Which Skye hotels are useful for ferries?
Uig Hotel describes itself as five minutes from the Uig terminal, useful for an onward Outer Hebrides trip. Sleat hotels are the southern choices to compare for Armadale. Confirm the complete drive, crossing, vehicle booking and check-in deadline rather than relying on proximity alone.
Do these hotels have parking?
Cuillin Hills and Broadford Hotel advertise private parking with direct bookings; Sonas publishes free on-site parking at Duisdale and Toravaig. Dunollie’s complimentary spaces are very limited. Confirm the others directly, and check the chosen rate and any overflow plan.
How many nights should I book on Skye?
As an itinerary suggestion, two nights give one full day and work best with a focused sightseeing area. Three nights allow two full days and more weather flexibility. A longer stay can justify separate northern and southern bases, but moving hotel uses time too.
Can I use this shortlist without a car?
The shortlist is written for road-trippers. Start with central Portree if you want to organise a trip without driving, then verify complete bus or tour connections and evening returns for each day. A remote hotel should be booked only after its transfers and dining arrangements are settled.
