Quick answer
Stay near Fort William station for the Jacobite or an easy rail arrival. Premier Inn is our first comparison, with the Alexandra as a central alternative if you also need parking. For Ben Nevis, choose Nevis Bank Inn at the entrance to Glen Nevis and arrange transport to the trailhead. For a celebration, book Inverlochy Castle Hotel in Torlundy and plan dinner and the transfer with your room.

The shortlist is based on desk research from hotel operators, transport providers and walking authorities. The order reflects different trip needs. We have not stayed at these hotels or checked live room rates.
Fort William sits at the head of Loch Linnhe. The railway station and An Aird are at the north end of the centre, the High Street extends towards West End, and the road into Glen Nevis branches away from town. Torlundy and the hotels farther south along Loch Linnhe work best when you have planned the extra journey.
Fort William hotel picks by trip type
Ranked for distinct trip types rather than a single definition of “best”. Check the trade-offs and exact room category before booking.
Premier Inn Fort William
An Aird and the stations, Fort William- Best for
- A car-free arrival or an early departure from Fort William station.
- Trade-off
- Retail-park setting
Start here for an overnight built around a train or coach. Premier Inn puts the room at the An Aird shopping end of town near both stations. It is an easy base to compare if you have an early departure or luggage, and the High Street is a separate outing from the retail park.
Booking tipCheck the route from your arrival stop and ask the hotel about parking if bringing a car.
Nevis Bank Inn
Glen Nevis entrance, Fort William- Best for
- Walkers who want a town-edge hotel and dinner on site.
- Trade-off
- Separate transfer to the Mountain Track start
Nevis Bank Inn is the practical compromise for a Ben Nevis trip that also includes evenings in Fort William. It sits at the entrance to Glen Nevis and has Browns Restaurant on site. Arrange the journey farther into the glen for the Mountain Track before settling on a start time.
Booking tipConfirm that your booking is in the hotel if Glen Nevis access is the reason for choosing it.
Inverlochy Castle Hotel
Torlundy, Fort William- Best for
- A celebration with time to spend at the hotel.
- Trade-off
- A separate journey from central Fort William
Choose Inverlochy Castle Hotel if dinner and time at the property are part of the reason for going. This nineteenth-century castle hotel is in Torlundy, with Seasgair and the Mary Shaw table among the experiences advertised by the hotel. Leave an evening free for it and agree the station transfer before reserving if you are coming by train.
Booking tipAsk the hotel to confirm your preferred dinner format and arrange a taxi separately if needed.
Alexandra Hotel
The Parade, Fort William- Best for
- A central base that works for a party arriving by both rail and car.
- Trade-off
- Town-centre setting
The Alexandra gives you a traditional central hotel near the station and High Street, with guest parking listed by the operator. It makes sense when two people are arriving separately by rail and car. Check the booking terms and current operating arrangements before making a prepaid reservation.
Booking tipConfirm trading, parking and cancellation terms directly, particularly before prepaying.
The Garrison Hotel & Apartments
West end of the High Street, Fort William- Best for
- A central independent stay with a choice of accommodation format.
- Trade-off
- Parking is chargeable and subject to availability
The Garrison is our independent High Street choice. The operator offers hotel rooms and serviced apartments and also advertises converted cell rooms. Book a conventional room or apartment if you want more flexibility around luggage and space, and check the exact building before planning your arrival.
Booking tipCheck the named room or apartment, its building and current parking availability.
Travelodge Fort William
West end of the High Street, Fort William- Best for
- A simple central room and evenings out on foot.
- Trade-off
- Hotel parking is first come, first served
Travelodge is a straightforward High Street chain option for a short stay spent mostly out of the room. It is useful for evenings in town and for comparing a simple double with more distinctive independent stays. Drivers should have a backup because the operator describes limited first-come parking.
Booking tipCheck the vehicle registration process and current terms for the West End car park.
Ben Nevis Hotel & Leisure Club
North Road, Fort William- Best for
- A driving stay with a pool for time between outings.
- Trade-off
- North Road base away from the High Street
This is the leisure-club choice if a swim would improve a mixed-weather trip. The hotel is on North Road and advertises parking, dining and an indoor pool. It makes more sense when the leisure facilities are part of the stay than when the main goal is a quick station-to-hotel arrival.
Booking tipConfirm trading, pool session rules and booking terms directly before prepaying.
Cruachan Hotel
Achintore Road waterfront, Fort William- Best for
- A lochside setting closer to central Fort William than the outlying lochside hotels.
- Trade-off
- Limited guest parking
Cruachan is a waterfront-side choice for people who want a hotel opposite Loch Linnhe and to keep the centre within reach. The hotel is on the A82, and parking within the grounds is limited. Ask about the room outlook and where you would park on a late arrival.
Booking tipAsk about the room outlook and the West End public car park as a fallback.
Lime Tree Hotel
Achintore Road, west of the centre, Fort William- Best for
- An independent stay near the west end of town.
- Trade-off
- Farther from the station than the An Aird and Parade picks
The Lime Tree is a smaller independent option at the Old Manse on Achintore Road. Choose it for the setting and character of the building while staying near the west end of town. Before booking, ask about the exact room and dinner arrangements for your dates.
Booking tipAsk about the route from reception to your named room if steps or luggage are a concern.
Clan MacDuff Hotel
Loch Linnhe south of town, Fort William- Best for
- A driving trip with a loch-facing room or a balcony.
- Trade-off
- South of the town centre
Clan MacDuff is our choice for a loch view you can select by room category. The hotel is south of town on Loch Linnhe and offers named loch-view and balcony rooms as well as rooms in MacDuff Lodge. The separate Lodge is reached across the car park and its bedrooms are upstairs.
Booking tipBook the named Loch View category and check whether it is in the hotel or the Lodge.
Hotels near Fort William railway station
Start with An Aird or The Parade if you arrive with luggage, have a morning departure or are meeting a coach. Premier Inn sits at the shopping-centre end near the rail and bus stations. The Alexandra is at The Parade, near the High Street as well as the station, and its operator lists guest parking. That makes it worth checking when one person arrives by rail and the other by car. Ask the Alexandra to confirm its booking and parking arrangements directly, as its operator is in administration.
For evenings in town, compare The Garrison with Travelodge at the west end of the High Street. The Garrison offers rooms and serviced apartments, including some distinctive converted cell rooms. Check which layout and building you are booking. Travelodge is the simpler chain choice. It lists limited first-come parking with registration validation, plus a paid public alternative at West End. The Garrison advertises chargeable parking subject to availability. If the car needs to stay overnight, plan where it will go before deciding between the two.
Where to stay for Ben Nevis
Nevis Bank Inn is the most useful comparison here if you want to start towards Glen Nevis and still have an on-site restaurant. Its location is at the entrance to the glen. The Mountain Track starts farther along at the Ben Nevis Visitor Centre, so look up the actual drop-off and return. If booking an apartment through Nevis Bank, check whether it is in the hotel or at the separate lochside site.
The Ben Nevis Hotel & Leisure Club is on North Road. Choose it for the indoor pool and parking, and confirm session arrangements and current booking terms directly with the hotel. Its name does not tell you how to get to the trailhead. With a car, check the visitor centre’s current parking information. Without one, check the service and last return with Shiel Buses for your dates or book a taxi in both directions. Seasonal services can change the plan.
Give the walking day some flexibility. Mountaineering Scotland advises checking the mountain forecast, and conditions in town may differ sharply from those on the summit. Keep another outing in mind, such as a lower-level walk in Glen Nevis, and leave room to swap the order of the train and walking days if your tickets and the weather allow.
Planning a Jacobite steam train day
Stay in town the night before an early Jacobite departure. Book your rail excursion for the actual operating day, check the operator’s boarding instructions, and then choose a hotel that keeps the morning simple. The Jacobite is West Coast Railways’ excursion from Fort William to Mallaig and back. ScotRail also runs scheduled services on the West Highland Line through Glenfinnan to Mallaig, with its own tickets and timetable.
West Coast Railways was still to announce its 2027 dates, fares and timings when we checked on 6 November 2026. If the steam trip is the reason for the hotel stay, wait for the operator’s date confirmation or choose a flexible room. For an onward journey to Skye, plan a separate connection at Mallaig. Check the ferry, the time between services and the journey from Armadale to your hotel before fixing the overnight.
Loch Linnhe hotels and a Torlundy castle stay
For a waterfront base with the town still within reach, compare Cruachan and the Lime Tree. Cruachan is opposite Loch Linnhe on the A82 and offers limited parking on site. The Lime Tree occupies the Old Manse on Achintore Road and suits travellers who prefer a smaller independent stay. At either, ask about the exact room and, if you are arriving late, your options for dinner and parking.
Clan MacDuff is farther south along Loch Linnhe. It is the stronger fit when the room outlook is a reason to book, because the operator lists named Loch View and balcony categories. Check the difference between a full and partial view and between the hotel and MacDuff Lodge. Lodge rooms sit across the car park on the first floor and are reached by stairs.
Inverlochy Castle Hotel is a different overnight in Torlundy. Book it when you have time for the property and its dining, including the experience currently advertised as Seasgair or the Mary Shaw table. Ask which formats run on your dates and whether the hotel can arrange a transfer or you need to reserve a taxi. For a morning departure, check both the pickup time and the cost before booking.
Onward from Fort William to Glencoe or Skye
Keep Fort William as your base when most of the trip is built around the railway, Glen Nevis or outings north and west of town. If the next day starts with a walk in Glen Coe, moving to a Glencoe or Ballachulish hotel can simplify the morning. Compare the exact trailhead with the village and glen hotel addresses before moving your booking.
For Skye, decide between the road via the Skye Bridge and the ferry from Mallaig to Armadale. If driving to the ferry, check vehicle space and the latest sailing status with CalMac. If travelling by rail and ferry, plan the connection on both sides and give yourself time between independently booked services. For the first night on Skye, pick the island base around the onward itinerary and your arrival time.

Choose for the journeys you will repeat, especially the trip back after dinner or a show.
Station and The Parade

- Best for
- Evenings in town, independent rooms and a choice of places to eat.
- Trade-off
- Allow a longer walk to the rail station than from An Aird or The Parade.
- Journey check
- Check parking and identify a public car park as backup.
Glen Nevis entrance and North Road
- Best for
- An early start towards Glen Nevis or a hotel with a pool.
- Trade-off

- Journey check
- Check the trailhead and the return before choosing a room.

- A driving trip with a loch view and dinner at the hotel.
- Trade-off
- A waterfront address alone does not tell you what your room faces.
- Journey check
- Choose a named view category and check its building.
Torlundy
- Best for
- A castle stay where dinner and time at the property are part of the trip.
- Trade-off
- Evenings in town require a separate journey.
- Journey check
- Book the taxi or agree transfer arrangements before arrival.

Fort William hotel booking guide
Four checks that matter more in Fort William than chasing a generic “best rate”.
Plan the hotel around the first departure
Choose An Aird or The Parade when the earliest train or coach sets the pace. For a trailhead start, arrange a ride from your actual hotel address.
Price the room with parking and transfers
Compare the full cost of public parking or a taxi with the room price. Read the terms for overnight parking and any vehicle registration requirement.
Choose the room category by name
If a loch view or balcony matters, book the category that promises it. Check the building and access route, particularly for a separate lodge or apartment.
