Quick answer

For a private hot tub, start with Gilpin’s Spa Suites or Spa Lodges, Rothay Manor’s Buttermere Pavilion Hot Tub Suite, or The Boathouse at Langdale Chase. Book the named accommodation: an ordinary room does not guarantee a hot tub. Seven shared alternatives include Low Wood Bay’s outdoor hot tubs, Lakeside’s indoor jacuzzi, The Swan’s Holte Spa and Brimstone’s included spa and estate facilities, alongside Another Place, Armathwaite Hall and Lodore Falls.

Editorially researched from official sources. No BestUKHotels.com stay, spa test, privacy inspection or accessibility assessment is recorded. Private accommodation is distinguished from shared facilities; hotel photographs are reused with the recorded permission.

Hotels in Lake District

Ranked by the selection criteria for this guide. Check the exact room, terms and inclusions before booking.

  1. Gilpin Hotel & Lake House

    LuxuryWindermere
    Best for
Celebrations, couples, private spa facilities and travellers planning the hotel as a major part of the trip.
    Trade-off
Gilpin Hotel and Lake House are separate properties with different experiences

The strongest retreat-style choice for couples prioritising privacy, destination dining and suites with serious in-room spa features over a walkable lakeside or village address.

Booking tipChoose between Gilpin Hotel and the separate Lake House deliberately; location, atmosphere and included facilities are not interchangeable.

  2. Rothay Manor Hotel

    Upper mid-rangeAmbleside
    Best for
Ambleside first visits, boutique country-house stays, food-focused couples and dog owners in the correct room.
    Trade-off
This is near Windermere rather than directly on the lakeshore

A polished twenty-three-room country-house base for travellers who want Ambleside's walks, boats and restaurants nearby without giving up a quiet garden setting and serious in-house dining.

Booking tipMatch the room to your needs: dog-friendly, ground-floor, balcony, hot-tub and pavilion categories differ significantly.

  3. Langdale Chase Hotel

    LuxuryWindermere
    Best for
A romantic first visit, landmark architecture, lake views and travellers who want Windermere on the doorstep.
    Trade-off
The roadside rural position is not a town-centre stay

The landmark lakeside choice for a first luxury Lake District stay, pairing a restored Victorian house with direct Windermere views and an address between Bowness and Ambleside.

Booking tipConfirm the exact building, floor and view: the main house, Lake House and Boathouse offer materially different stays.

  4. Another Place, The Lake

    Upper mid-rangeUllswater, Penrith
    Best for
Active families, swimming, lake sports, relaxed group trips and dog owners booking the right room.
    Trade-off
The rural shoreline setting limits spontaneous off-site dining without transport

The strongest active-family choice in the shortlist, with eighteen acres on Ullswater, a private shore, a 20-metre pool, supervised children's sessions and water-based activities.

Booking tipNot every room has a lake view; compare the room category, family set-up, swim times and activity availability before paying.

  5. Armathwaite Hall Hotel & Spa

    Upper mid-rangeBassenthwaite, Keswick
    Best for
Country-house breaks, spa time, families, celebrations and travellers exploring the quieter northern Lakes.
    Trade-off
The rural estate setting makes a car or pre-booked taxi highly practical

The spacious northern-Lakes country-house option, with forty-three rooms, a large spa and 400 acres beside Bassenthwaite, well suited to travellers happy to make the estate their base.

Booking tipCheck whether the room is in the main house, spa wing or grounds and whether it has the lake, estate or courtyard outlook you expect.

  6. Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa

    Upper mid-rangeBorrowdale, Keswick
    Best for
Spa weekends, Borrowdale walking, Derwentwater scenery and travellers wanting a larger full-service hotel.
    Trade-off
Spa access and lake views are not included with every room category

A full-service Borrowdale base combining Derwentwater and Catbells views with eighty-six rooms and a substantial adults-only thermal spa, but room category determines both outlook and included spa time.

Booking tipSuite guests receive timed spa access; other room categories may pay separately, so compare the complete rate and reserve a slot.

  7. Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa

    Upper mid-rangeWindermere
    Best for
Active families, Windermere watersports, indoor swimming and a central-Lakes resort base.
    Trade-off
The family-room page does not state one clear maximum occupancy or child-bed layout

A Windermere-shore resort for families who value an indoor pool and bookable watersports, provided the Hazel Family Room’s precise occupancy and bed plan are confirmed before payment.

Booking tipThe official Hazel Family Room page does not publish a universal occupancy; ask for the room number, every bed and the current child pool times in writing.

  8. The Swan Hotel & Spa

    Upper mid-rangeNewby Bridge, Ulverston
    Best for
Families of four or five, pool time, southern Windermere attractions and multi-generational stays.
    Trade-off
Holte Spa is adults-only and normally costs extra with family-room bookings

A strong south-Lakes family resort for parties needing a named suite with children’s sleeping space, a family pool and easy access to steam-train, aquarium and southern Windermere days.

Booking tipBook the exact suite rather than a generic family room, and distinguish the included family pool from the separately charged adults-only Holte Spa.

  9. Lakeside Hotel & Spa

    Upper mid-rangeLakeside, Newby Bridge
    Best for
Families of four or five, pool time, Lakeside attractions and south-Windermere itineraries.
    Trade-off
The southern position adds time to Keswick, Borrowdale and Ullswater days

A practical south-Windermere choice for families wanting a real suite, a 17-metre indoor pool and car-light access to the aquarium, steam railway and lake boats.

Booking tipThe Courtyard Family Suite’s bunk area is the clearest separation; compare it with Junior Suites by exact occupancy, bed type and pool timetable.

  10. Brimstone Hotel

    LuxuryGreat Langdale, Ambleside
    Best for
Couples, spa-led breaks, winter stays and walkers who want to be based in Great Langdale.
    Trade-off
The valley location is deliberately removed from rail stations and larger towns

The adults-only spa retreat for couples who want Great Langdale walking outside and a thermal experience, generous baths, fires and private balconies back at the hotel.

Booking tipCompare each room individually: baths, balconies, fires and layouts vary, and Great Langdale transport needs planning.

Choose by your priorities

If you want a private hot tub plus sauna and steam facilities

Compare Gilpin’s named Spa Suite and Spa Lodge categories, rather than an ordinary bedroom.

If you want a courtyard hot tub with an Ambleside base

Ask for Rothay Manor’s Buttermere Pavilion Hot Tub Suite; a Pavilion booking alone is insufficient.

If you want a private hot tub beside Windermere

Compare The Boathouse at Langdale Chase and confirm its outdoor layout and access route.

If you are happy to share the water

Compare the seven shared alternatives below, checking whether you want an indoor jacuzzi, outdoor hot tub or larger hydrotherapy pool, and whether access is included or timed.

If you want shared outdoor hot tubs on Windermere

Compare Low Wood Bay with a Spa Break or separately booked Thermal Journey. Ordinary leisure-pool access does not include the thermal spa.

If you want an indoor jacuzzi included with the stay

Compare Lakeside’s resident leisure facilities and check the current swimming timetable.

If you want an adult hotel with included shared spa access

Compare Brimstone in Great Langdale; a room balcony or bath is separate from the shared spa and estate hot tub.

Compare the private hot-tub rooms first

A hot tub can be the reason to stay in rather than squeeze another outing into a Lake District break. The important purchase is the accommodation category: a hotel might offer one exceptional suite alongside bedrooms with entirely different facilities. Start with the three private options below if sharing the water would defeat the point of the trip.

Private hot-tub comparison

Hotel and area Accommodation to book Facility and setting Use and inclusion Principal trade-off
Gilpin, Windermere area Spa Suite or Spa Lodge Outdoor garden hot tub with private spa facilities Exclusive to the named accommodation Compare the two layouts; an ordinary room is a different booking
Rothay Manor, Ambleside Buttermere Pavilion Hot Tub Suite Cedarwood hot tub in a courtyard garden Private facility attached to this suite Other Pavilion suites have different features
Langdale Chase, Ecclerigg The Boathouse Outdoor hot tub beside Windermere; separate indoor copper bath Attached to the named Boathouse accommodation Confirm the outdoor layout and route to the main hotel

The first three entries in the hotel shortlist are the private choices. The shared alternatives later in this guide are included for readers who would rather compare a wider spa with a private room upgrade. They do not provide the same experience.

Hotels with private hot tubs

Gilpin — for a private spa as well as a hot tub

Gilpin Hotel & Lake House is the starting point when you want more than an outdoor soak. Its Spa Suites combine a garden hot tub with private sauna and steam facilities. Spa Lodges put a hydrotherapy hot tub and sauna outdoors, with a steam room indoors. Compare those layouts before deciding which category fits the time you expect to spend in the accommodation.

Book: a named Spa Suite or Spa Lodge. Check the estate and category on the confirmation; the Hotel and Lake House names should not be treated as interchangeable room descriptions.

The trade-off: spending on several private facilities makes most sense if you will use them. For a trip filled with long days out, compare the total cost with a simpler hot-tub suite. Ask about permitted hours and any restrictions rather than assuming unlimited overnight use. See Gilpin’s official in-room spa descriptions for the category differences.

Rothay Manor — for a courtyard hot tub in Ambleside

Rothay Manor offers a more specific booking target: the Buttermere Pavilion Hot Tub Suite, whose courtyard contains a private cedarwood hot tub. The Pavilion accommodation is separate from the main house. Choose it when you want the hot tub to be part of the room experience rather than a communal spa visit.

Book: Buttermere, with the hot tub explicitly confirmed. The official Pavilion page lists several suites with gardens, balconies or freestanding baths; those details do not establish a hot tub in each one.

The trade-off: a courtyard is a different setting from a lakeside terrace. Choose this for an Ambleside base and the facility itself. Ask about screening, the outdoor route and operating hours if those determine whether you will enjoy using it. A suite’s private garden is not evidence that every sightline has been screened.

Langdale Chase — for the Boathouse on Windermere

Langdale Chase gives the shortlist a shorefront alternative. The Boathouse publishes an outdoor hot tub alongside a private entrance, terrace and jetty. Its indoor copper bath is a separate feature; the two should not be confused when comparing room descriptions.

Book: The Boathouse, rather than a general Windermere-facing room. The official accommodation page is the relevant starting point.

The trade-off: accommodation apart from the main building needs its own access check. Ask how you reach breakfast and dinner, whether steps affect the route, and how the hot-tub area is arranged. Choose this when being beside Windermere matters as much as the tub; compare the exact outdoor layout if seclusion matters more than the setting.

Shared hot tubs and hydrotherapy alternatives

A shared facility can be a sensible alternative if you would use it for a short session and prefer to spend on the wider hotel stay. Be clear about what changes: there may be other guests, opening hours, age restrictions or a reserved slot. A hydrotherapy pool is not a private hot tub attached to your bedroom.

Hotel and area What to book Facility Access model Principal trade-off
Another Place, Ullswater Hotel accommodation with Swim Club access Shared outdoor soaking tub, without bubbles or jets Available to hotel guests; hot tub is 16-plus Suits a warm soak rather than jetted hydrotherapy
Armathwaite Hall, Bassenthwaite Resident room; compare treatments separately Shared outdoor hydrotherapy pool Spa access included from check-in to check-out Shared spa experience rather than room-level exclusivity
Lodore Falls, Borrowdale Suite with included slot, or room plus paid access Shared outdoor hydrotherapy pool Ordinary terms provide a pre-booked two-hour slot per night with suites Check timed access and the announced 2027 works
Low Wood Bay, Windermere Spa Break or room plus Thermal Journey Shared outdoor hot tubs and thermal pools One three-hour journey per stay with qualifying Spa Break packages Ordinary leisure-pool access does not include the spa
The Swan, Newby Bridge Qualifying Splendid room or suite, or room plus thermal access Shared jetted Jacuzzi and indoor-outdoor hydrotherapy Included with named categories, subject to rate exceptions and pre-booking Wider hotel welcomes families; spa is a separate facility
Lakeside, southern Windermere Resident room with included leisure access Shared indoor poolside jacuzzi Published resident rate includes the leisure facilities Indoor facility with a swimming timetable, rather than a private terrace tub
Brimstone, Great Langdale Hotel room with included spa and leisure access Estate hot tub plus separate indoor-outdoor spa pool Shared facilities available to Brimstone guests Adult hotel; neither a balcony nor a Spa Suite name establishes a private hot tub

Another Place — for an Ullswater soak without jets

Another Place, The Lake explicitly describes its Swim Club outdoor hot tub as having no bubbles or jets. That is useful information if the sensation of hydrotherapy is what you are looking for. It is a shared soaking facility reached from the indoor pool, alongside a sauna.

Hotel guests can use Swim Club. The hot tub and sauna are for guests aged 16 and over, and the hotel publishes separate adult and family swimming periods. Check the current FAQs when planning your session.

The trade-off: this is a family-welcoming hotel, not a private couples-only spa. Pick it for a wider Ullswater stay with a soak as one part of the day. A quiet swimming period still does not reserve the tub for your party.

Armathwaite Hall — for included shared hydrotherapy

Armathwaite Hall is the Bassenthwaite alternative when shared facilities appeal more than a private suite. Its outdoor hydrotherapy pool is part of the spa, and resident access is included from check-in to check-out. Treatments cost extra unless the chosen package includes them.

Book: the bedroom that suits your party, then check treatment availability separately. Buying a more expensive room does not make the outdoor pool private.

The trade-off: this is a country-house spa stay. Its published child-use window concerns the indoor swimming pool; do not extend that permission to the outdoor facility. Consult the hotel’s pool and access information and ask about your party’s ages before paying.

Lodore Falls — for a reserved shared-spa session in Borrowdale

Lodore Falls offers an outdoor hydrotherapy pool at The Falls Spa. Ordinary published terms include a pre-booked two-hour slot per night with suites; standard, classic and lake-view rooms pay separately. A reserved slot is admission to the shared spa, not exclusive use of its pool. Confirm the age policy for your party: official pages use both “18+” and “over 18”.

Check winter dates: the hotel announces expansion from 3 January to 25 March 2027, saying the spa will remain open with possible garden activity. Its expansion notice and ordinary access terms need a date-specific confirmation. Ask about noise, facilities and your rate’s inclusion before making it non-refundable.

The trade-off: timed shared access offers less flexibility than a private tub. Match the slot to arrival and dinner. Read the spa access terms and works notice together.

Low Wood Bay — for shared outdoor hot tubs on Windermere

Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa adds an outdoor-hot-tub choice for travellers happy to share. Its thermal spa combines outdoor hot tubs with vitality and infinity pools. Pick it when you want to move between water facilities during a planned spa session, rather than spend the whole evening in a private suite.

Book: a qualifying Spa Break or add a Thermal Journey to your room. The official FAQs describe one three-hour journey per stay with Spa Break packages. Ordinary bed-and-breakfast and dinner-inclusive bookings do not automatically include it. Access to the main leisure pool is a different inclusion.

The trade-off: plan around the reserved session. The spa page announces maintenance closure of the spa and leisure facilities on 5 and 6 January 2027, reopening on 7 January. Check your dates before building the break around the water.

The Swan — for a shared jetted pool and south-Lakes stay

The Swan Hotel & Spa at Newby Bridge offers Holte Spa’s shared jetted Jacuzzi pool and indoor-outdoor hydrotherapy pool. It suits readers who want more variety than a single soaking tub, while keeping the hotel stay in the southern Lakes.

Book: a qualifying Splendid room or suite, or another category whose confirmation includes thermal access. The hotel FAQs list included access between 10am and 4pm for specified categories, with pre-booking essential and some promotional rates excluded. Confirm your exact terms; the inclusion is not a private facility attached to the bedroom.

The trade-off: the wider hotel welcomes families, and its family swimming pool is separate from Holte Spa. Choose the shared thermal facilities for a booked session, rather than assuming that a romantic room name or freestanding bath means a private hot tub.

Lakeside — for an included indoor jacuzzi

Lakeside Hotel & Spa adds a traditional indoor option on southern Windermere. Its poolside jacuzzi sits within the leisure facilities alongside the swimming pool, sauna and steam room. Choose it if an indoor soak matters more than an outdoor terrace or an extensive thermal circuit.

Book: a resident room with the published leisure inclusion. The rate policy includes these facilities; treatments need their own booking and inclusion check. Select a lake-view bedroom separately if that outlook is also important.

The trade-off: the jacuzzi is communal, and swimming has family and adult periods. Check the current timetable and the jacuzzi’s specific age rules for your party. An outdoor spa garden does not turn the indoor jacuzzi into an outdoor hot tub.

Brimstone — for an adult hotel with shared spa access

Brimstone Hotel broadens the choices to Great Langdale. The hotel publishes guest access to the Langdale Estate’s leisure facilities, including a shared hot tub. Its separate Brimstone Spa has an indoor-outdoor relaxation pool with bubble experiences, jets and a fountain, with access complimentary for hotel guests.

Book: the room that fits your stay, then confirm current spa hours and departure-day arrangements. Brimstone hotel guests must be at least 18. Its spa description distinguishes the shared thermal experience from the room itself.

The trade-off: a Spa Suite name, large bath or balcony does not establish a private hot tub. Choose this for an adult hotel environment and shared facilities; choose one of the three private options earlier in the guide if exclusive use is essential. The estate overview explains the wider leisure setting.

Choose the setting as carefully as the tub

For a short trip, avoid letting a room feature pull you far from everything else you want to do. Compare the final arrival journey, dinner arrangements and one realistic local outing before settling on the hotel. Our Lake District where-to-stay guide explains the wider area choices.

The three private choices here focus on the Windermere area and Ambleside. The shared alternatives add Ullswater, Bassenthwaite, Borrowdale, Great Langdale and the southern end of Windermere. These are different bases for a holiday, so choose one that fits most of your plans rather than arranging repeated journeys across the park.

For a car-free break, plan the complete journey with luggage. The National Park’s transport guidance covers rail gateways and onward connections. Check current timetables, the final stop, the walking route and the last service back; organise any taxi transfer before relying on it for a late arrival. A scenic hotel address does not establish a convenient station walk.

If the view matters as much as the water, use our lake-view hotel comparison to assess the room outlook. A hot tub in a garden does not establish a lake view. Equally, a beautiful lake-facing bedroom may have only a conventional bath.

What to confirm before booking a hot-tub room

Get the category in writing. Save the room description and check the booking confirmation against it. A photograph in a hotel gallery can show an upgrade rather than the room in your basket. If the platform does not name the hot-tub category clearly, resolve that before paying.

Ask how private the outdoor space feels. Exclusive use and visual privacy answer different questions. Request details of screening, adjacent terraces, nearby paths and the actual allocation. Promotional language such as “romantic retreat” does not settle those points, and we have not inspected them.

Check usable hours. Ask when the tub is available after arrival, whether there is an evening cut-off and what happens during cleaning or maintenance. Do not assume round-the-clock use, winter availability or an unrestricted session because the facility is attached to the room. If it is essential, ask how an unexpected closure would be handled.

Check the whole access route. Describe any mobility requirements and ask about the route from the bedroom to the tub, steps into the water, handrails, surfaces and the journey to meals. An accessible bedroom does not automatically establish an accessible hot tub. Obtain specific answers for the accommodation you intend to reserve.

Compare the complete stay. Use the same dates, occupancy, cancellation terms and meal inclusions. Add any shared-spa charge, treatment, dinner or transfer you actually want. We have not compared live rates, so this guide does not label a property the cheapest or promise availability.

Confirm children and dogs separately. A family-friendly hotel can restrict spa use, and a dog-friendly suite can have its own outdoor rules. Do not assume access to every facility from a broad hotel label. For wider accommodation choices, see our family hotels and dog-friendly hotels guides.

Plan a break you have time to enjoy

For two nights, we suggest keeping arrival evening at the hotel, choosing one local outing for the full day and leaving time to use the accommodation before departure. For one night, simplify the journey and compare the time you will actually have after check-in with the hot-tub hours. This is itinerary advice, not a statement about any hotel’s minimum stay.

Reserve dinner and any shared spa session around that plan. Leave room for the weather to change without making every hour depend on an outdoor soak. Ask whether the tub is covered or exposed if that would change your choice; neither a terrace photograph nor a year-round room listing answers the question reliably.

Choose a private suite if having the water to yourselves is essential. Choose a shared alternative if a short session is enough and the broader stay matters more. For a trip centred on thermal facilities and treatments, our spa-hotel guide compares the wider options; for dining, atmosphere and time together, use the romantic-hotels guide.

Quick answers

Common questions about hotels in Lake District

Practical answers for comparing the shortlist before you book.

Which Lake District hotels have private hot tubs?

The private options in this shortlist are Gilpin’s Spa Suites and Spa Lodges, Rothay Manor’s Buttermere Pavilion Hot Tub Suite, and The Boathouse at Langdale Chase. These facilities belong to named accommodation, so check the category on the booking confirmation.

Does every room at a hot-tub hotel include one?

No. A hotel may have only a particular suite with a private hot tub, or offer a shared facility elsewhere on the property. Select the precise accommodation and check its inclusions; a general hotel booking or romantic package name is insufficient.

What is the difference between a hot tub and a spa bath?

An indoor jetted bath is usually a bathroom fixture; an outdoor hot tub is a separate soaking facility, while a hydrotherapy pool is a larger spa facility. Names alone can mislead: Another Place calls its shared outdoor soaking tub a hot tub but explicitly says it has no bubbles or jets.

Which hotels have hot tubs on balconies?

This shortlist does not verify a balcony hot-tub category. Its private choices have outdoor facilities attached to named suites or the Boathouse. A balcony, Juliet balcony or freestanding bath in a room description does not establish that there is a hot tub. Confirm the specific outdoor layout if a balcony is essential.

Is shared spa access included in the room price?

Armathwaite Hall, Lakeside and Brimstone publish included resident facilities; Another Place provides Swim Club access. Low Wood Bay ordinarily requires a Spa Break or paid Thermal Journey. The Swan includes Holte Spa with named room categories, subject to rate exceptions and pre-booking. Lodore ordinarily includes a reserved two-hour slot per night with suites; other rooms pay separately. Confirm access for your dates, especially during announced works.

Are hot-tub hotels suitable for families?

Hotel and facility age rules are separate. Another Place welcomes families, but its hot tub and sauna are for guests aged 16 and over. Armathwaite Hall’s child swim window applies to the indoor pool, so do not assume it allows children into outdoor hydrotherapy. Check the exact room occupancy and facility policy before booking; our family-hotel guide covers broader options.

Does a private hot tub guarantee complete privacy?

No. Exclusive use establishes who uses the facility, not whether a terrace can be seen from nearby rooms or paths. Ask for the actual room layout, screening and operating hours. We have not inspected sightlines at these properties.

Can I book a one-night hot-tub break?

Check the exact dates and category: minimum stays and packages can vary. Compare usable time between check-in and check-out with the tub’s operating hours, cleaning schedule and any spa slot. Do not assume a hotel-wide room search establishes a one-night offer for its hot-tub accommodation.

Which hotels have shared outdoor hot tubs or pools?

Low Wood Bay publishes outdoor hot tubs; Another Place has an outdoor soaking tub without jets. Armathwaite Hall and Lodore Falls offer shared outdoor hydrotherapy pools, while The Swan and Brimstone have indoor-outdoor spa pools. These facilities are separate from private hot tubs attached to accommodation. Lakeside’s jacuzzi is indoors.

Are any spa facilities closing for maintenance?

Low Wood Bay announces closure of its spa and leisure facilities on 5 and 6 January 2027, reopening on 7 January. Lodore Falls announces expansion from 3 January to 25 March 2027, with the spa remaining open but possible garden activity. Confirm the current programme and your booking’s inclusions directly before paying.

Methodology

This ten-hotel shortlist compares three documented private hot-tub choices and seven clearly labelled shared alternatives. The additions broaden the choices to a paid Windermere thermal session, a south-Lakes resort spa, an included indoor jacuzzi and an adult hotel in Great Langdale. Official room, spa, access and transport sources were checked on 29 October 2026; restricted Brimstone pages were checked through indexed official text. This is a selective comparison, not an exhaustive directory or a live availability search. We have not stayed, tested the water, inspected terrace privacy or assessed hot-tub accessibility. Confirm the exact room, operating hours and inclusions before booking.
