Hotels in Lake District

Ranked by the selection criteria for this guide. Check the exact room, terms and inclusions before booking.

  1. Gilpin Hotel & Lake House

    LuxuryWindermere
    Best for
Celebrations, couples, private spa facilities and travellers planning the hotel as a major part of the trip.
    Trade-off
Gilpin Hotel and Lake House are separate properties with different experiences

The strongest retreat-style choice for couples prioritising privacy, destination dining and suites with serious in-room spa features over a walkable lakeside or village address.

Booking tipChoose between Gilpin Hotel and the separate Lake House deliberately; location, atmosphere and included facilities are not interchangeable.

  2. Langdale Chase Hotel

    LuxuryWindermere
    Best for
A romantic first visit, landmark architecture, lake views and travellers who want Windermere on the doorstep.
    Trade-off
The roadside rural position is not a town-centre stay

The landmark lakeside choice for a first luxury Lake District stay, pairing a restored Victorian house with direct Windermere views and an address between Bowness and Ambleside.

Booking tipConfirm the exact building, floor and view: the main house, Lake House and Boathouse offer materially different stays.

  3. Brimstone Hotel

    LuxuryGreat Langdale, Ambleside
    Best for
Couples, spa-led breaks, winter stays and walkers who want to be based in Great Langdale.
    Trade-off
The valley location is deliberately removed from rail stations and larger towns

The adults-only spa retreat for couples who want Great Langdale walking outside and a thermal experience, generous baths, fires and private balconies back at the hotel.

Booking tipCompare each room individually: baths, balconies, fires and layouts vary, and Great Langdale transport needs planning.

  4. The Forest Side

    LuxuryGrasmere
    Best for
Destination dining, couples, Grasmere walking and travellers who prefer a small country house to a full resort.
    Trade-off
The restaurant is central to the value, so it is less suitable if you do not want a tasting-led stay

The food-first Lake District stay: a twenty-bedroom Victorian Gothic house above Grasmere where the Michelin-starred restaurant and working kitchen garden shape the experience.

Booking tipCheck whether your rate includes the four- or eight-course dinner and choose Cosy, Superb or Master with room size and bathroom layout in mind.

  5. Rothay Manor Hotel

    Upper mid-rangeAmbleside
    Best for
Ambleside first visits, boutique country-house stays, food-focused couples and dog owners in the correct room.
    Trade-off
This is near Windermere rather than directly on the lakeshore

A polished twenty-three-room country-house base for travellers who want Ambleside's walks, boats and restaurants nearby without giving up a quiet garden setting and serious in-house dining.

Booking tipMatch the room to your needs: dog-friendly, ground-floor, balcony, hot-tub and pavilion categories differ significantly.

  6. Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa

    Upper mid-rangeBorrowdale, Keswick
    Best for
Spa weekends, Borrowdale walking, Derwentwater scenery and travellers wanting a larger full-service hotel.
    Trade-off
Spa access and lake views are not included with every room category

A full-service Borrowdale base combining Derwentwater and Catbells views with eighty-six rooms and a substantial adults-only thermal spa, but room category determines both outlook and included spa time.

Booking tipSuite guests receive timed spa access; other room categories may pay separately, so compare the complete rate and reserve a slot.

  7. Another Place, The Lake

    Upper mid-rangeUllswater, Penrith
    Best for
Active families, swimming, lake sports, relaxed group trips and dog owners booking the right room.
    Trade-off
The rural shoreline setting limits spontaneous off-site dining without transport

The strongest active-family choice in the shortlist, with eighteen acres on Ullswater, a private shore, a 20-metre pool, supervised children's sessions and water-based activities.

Booking tipNot every room has a lake view; compare the room category, family set-up, swim times and activity availability before paying.

  8. Armathwaite Hall Hotel & Spa

    Upper mid-rangeBassenthwaite, Keswick
    Best for
Country-house breaks, spa time, families, celebrations and travellers exploring the quieter northern Lakes.
    Trade-off
The rural estate setting makes a car or pre-booked taxi highly practical

The spacious northern-Lakes country-house option, with forty-three rooms, a large spa and 400 acres beside Bassenthwaite, well suited to travellers happy to make the estate their base.

Booking tipCheck whether the room is in the main house, spa wing or grounds and whether it has the lake, estate or courtyard outlook you expect.

  9. The Daffodil Hotel & Spa

    Upper mid-rangeGrasmere
    Best for
Couples, friends, Grasmere walking breaks and guests who want thermal access included rather than added to the room rate.
    Trade-off
Guests under 16 cannot use the spa facilities

A strong Grasmere spa base for adults who want a thermal pool, sauna and steam room included with the stay, while keeping village walks and central-Lakes scenery close.

Booking tipThe thermal pool is a hydrotherapy experience rather than a swimming pool; reserve treatments separately and confirm that every spa user is at least 16.

  10. The Swan Hotel & Spa

    Upper mid-rangeNewby Bridge, Ulverston
    Best for
Families of four or five, pool time, southern Windermere attractions and multi-generational stays.
    Trade-off
Holte Spa is adults-only and normally costs extra with family-room bookings

A strong south-Lakes family resort for parties needing a named suite with children’s sleeping space, a family pool and easy access to steam-train, aquarium and southern Windermere days.

Booking tipBook the exact suite rather than a generic family room, and distinguish the included family pool from the separately charged adults-only Holte Spa.

Choose by your priorities

If you want a private spa inside your accommodation

Compare Gilpin’s named Spa Suites and Spa Lodges. Their private hot tub, sauna and steam facilities are different from the simpler hot-tub room categories.

If you want the lake view to be the occasion

Choose a documented Windermere-facing category at Langdale Chase. Confirm the room name, outlook and bathroom before paying.

If you want an adult hotel environment and shared spa time

Choose Brimstone in Great Langdale. Hotel guests must be at least 18 and spa access is included; treatments and the final valley transfer need separate planning.

If you are travelling primarily for dinner

Start with The Forest Side, check the available menu and reserve the table alongside the room. Look at a Master Room if a double-ended bath matters.

If you want Ambleside plus a private hot tub

Check Rothay Manor’s specifically named Buttermere Pavilion Suite. Other Pavilion categories publish different gardens, balconies and bathroom layouts.

If you want Borrowdale walks and outdoor hydrotherapy

Compare a Lodore suite with a room plus paid spa access. Ask about the announced January–March 2027 expansion before arranging a quiet anniversary.

If you want a shared adventure as well as time indoors

Choose Another Place on Ullswater for lake activities and Swim Club. Check activity bookings and adult swim periods; this is also a family hotel.

If you want a country-house spa stay in the northern Lakes

Compare Armathwaite Hall and its Deluxe Lake View Rooms. Resident spa access is included from check-in to check-out; treatments are separate.

If you want Grasmere views and included thermal facilities

Choose a named Lake View room at The Daffodil. Its spa admits guests aged 16 and over; do not confuse its thermal pool with a lap pool.

If you want a river-facing suite and a distinctive bath

Compare The Swan’s Loom and Soma Splendid Suites, which publish River Leven views, copper baths and included Holte Spa access within specified hours.

Choose the experience you want together

A romantic stay in the Lake District can mean a private hot tub, dinner worth travelling for, an unhurried morning looking across the water or a walking day followed by a shared spa. Those are different purchases. Decide which one matters before comparing hotel names, and spend on the room or reservation that delivers it.

Ten romantic hotels, with different reasons to stay

1. Gilpin — for a private-spa celebration

Gilpin Hotel & Lake House is the clearest fit when privacy is the point of the trip. Its named Spa Suites and Spa Lodges combine a private hot tub with sauna and steam facilities. That lets a couple spend time together without organising the day around a shared thermal session.

Book the accommodation deliberately: a room with a hot tub is not automatically the same product as a private spa suite. Also confirm whether the reservation is at Gilpin Hotel or the separate Lake House. Compare the precise room, dinner plan and location before paying; the headline gallery cannot establish what every category includes.

The trade-off: this is a hotel-centred retreat rather than a town-centre base. Arrange the final transfer and protect time to use what you are buying. If your plan is to be out exploring from breakfast until dinner, a substantial private-spa upgrade may add little to the trip.

2. Langdale Chase — for a lake-view anniversary

Langdale Chase suits couples who want Windermere to shape the occasion. The hotel documents lake-and-garden outlooks for its Windermere Rooms, and its panoramic Dining Room gives dinner a connection to the water too. It is our view-led choice rather than a substitute for a thermal-spa stay.

Spend on the outlook you will use. Ask for the official category name and confirm the bathroom arrangement; the Windermere address does not guarantee that every available bedroom matches the image in your head. If a bath is essential, have it confirmed independently of the view.

The trade-off: Ecclerigg is a shoreline base rather than a central Bowness or Ambleside address. Plan onward travel if you want to dine elsewhere. A hotel dinner and time in the room may suit an anniversary better than repeatedly leaving for another town.

3. Brimstone — for an adults-only spa retreat

Brimstone Hotel is the hotel to compare first if an adult environment matters as much as the facilities. It requires hotel guests to be at least 18 and includes access to Brimstone Spa. Room descriptions distinguish features such as baths, stoves and balconies, so check the category rather than assuming all three come with every booking.

The spa is shared, even though the hotel feels like a retreat. Choose Gilpin instead if exclusive facilities for two are the essential purchase. At Brimstone, reserve any treatment separately and leave room in the itinerary for Great Langdale rather than making the valley merely a transfer to a spa.

The trade-off: the final journey takes more planning than a town-centre arrival. Confirm transport before a late dinner or treatment, and ask about stairs and the route between bedroom and spa if either guest has access needs.

4. The Forest Side — for couples travelling for dinner

The Forest Side makes sense when the meal is the main reservation. Its Grasmere restaurant builds its cooking around seasonal ingredients, its kitchen garden and Cumbrian producers. Staying overnight allows the evening to unfold without arranging a drive afterwards.

Check the menu, dietary requirements, dining dates and cancellation terms before committing to the bedroom. For a more indulgent room, the Master category explicitly describes sitting areas and double-ended baths. A smaller room may be perfectly suitable when dinner is the priority, but compare that choice with the time you expect to spend indoors.

The trade-off: choose this for food and room character rather than assuming a spa-resort experience. If either guest dislikes a lengthy dining occasion, start with the menu and service format; the reputation alone will not make it the right anniversary.

5. Rothay Manor — for Ambleside and a carefully chosen suite

Rothay Manor offers a useful middle ground between a country-house occasion and an Ambleside base. The separate Pavilion accommodation has distinct layouts. Buttermere specifically lists a private cedarwood hot tub; other named suites advertise different gardens, balconies and bathrooms. Esthwaite, for example, lists a terraced garden and freestanding bath.

The Rowan restaurant also gives you an on-site dinner option. Reserve it alongside the room if that is the plan, while leaving a second evening free if you want to explore independently.

The trade-off: “Pavilion Suite” is not enough detail to secure a hot tub or your preferred access arrangement. Request the named suite, confirm its features and check the route into Ambleside for the way you intend to travel. Choose a lake-facing Langdale Chase room if water views are the primary reason for the trip.

6. Lodore Falls — for Borrowdale and outdoor hydrotherapy

Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa pairs a Borrowdale base with a shared outdoor hydrotherapy pool overlooking Derwentwater. It is a useful alternative to the Windermere-area picks when your outdoor plans point towards the northern Lakes.

Ordinary published access terms distinguish suites, which include a pre-booked two-hour spa session per night, from other rooms, which add access separately. The spa is over-18; the hotel itself is not an adults-only retreat. Reserve the session rather than assuming that a bedroom booking secures the time you want.

Check before a winter celebration: the hotel announces spa expansion from 3 January to 25 March 2027. It says the spa will remain open, with possible garden activity during early stages. Ask about noise, screening, views, room location and date-specific access. If quiet is essential, obtain a specific answer before choosing a non-refundable rate.

7. Another Place, The Lake — for an active break on Ullswater

Another Place, The Lake suits couples who would rather share an activity than spend the entire weekend in a spa. Its Ullswater programme includes paddleboarding and kayaking, while Swim Club brings a lake-view indoor pool, sauna and shared outdoor hot tub. Hotel guests have access to Swim Club, but activities and treatments need their own booking checks.

Keep the plan manageable: choose one activity, confirm the weather arrangements and leave time to enjoy the shore. Ask for the room outlook you want rather than assuming the whole property has an uninterrupted view.

The trade-off: this is also a family hotel. Use the published adult swim periods if a quieter pool session matters, and choose Brimstone if an adults-only hotel is essential. Another Place offers a different sort of romance: doing something together, then returning to a comfortable base.

8. Armathwaite Hall — for a country-house spa occasion

Armathwaite Hall Hotel & Spa adds a northern country-house option beside Bassenthwaite. The spa includes an indoor pool, outdoor hydrotherapy and thermal facilities, with resident access from check-in to check-out. That makes it a useful comparison with Lodore when you want to spend a substantial part of the break at the hotel.

For the room, start with the Main House Deluxe Lake View category, which explicitly describes views towards the lake. Rooms are individually designed, so confirm the outlook, bed and bathroom for the reservation rather than treating the category photograph as a floor plan.

The trade-off: included facilities do not mean included treatments or exclusive use. The hotel also has a limited child pool period. Reserve treatments separately and plan dinner and onward travel before choosing this rural base; it is better for settling in than for spontaneous evenings elsewhere.

9. The Daffodil — for Grasmere views and thermal relaxation

The Daffodil Hotel & Spa gives couples another reason to choose Grasmere beyond destination dining. Its named Lake View rooms publish views of Grasmere, plus a bath and separate shower. That is a clearer booking basis than choosing the least expensive room at a lakeside address and hoping for the same outlook.

The hotel includes resident spa facilities, with a thermal pool, sauna and steam room for guests aged 16 and over. Use them as a relaxation session rather than planning a lap-swimming workout, and check treatment availability separately.

The trade-off: the spa age rule does not make the whole hotel adults-only, and the room categories have materially different outlooks. Compare the price of the view you actually want with The Forest Side if dinner is the priority, or Brimstone if the adult hotel environment matters more than being in Grasmere.

10. The Swan — for a river-facing suite and copper bath

The Swan Hotel & Spa adds a south-Lakes alternative at Newby Bridge. Its named Loom and Soma Splendid Suites document River Leven views, a freestanding copper bath and included Holte Spa access during specified daytime hours. These are concrete reasons to consider the hotel for an anniversary, rather than relying on a generic couples package.

Reserve the exact category and the thermal slot together. Holte Spa and the family-friendly pool are separate facilities; ordinary room access is not interchangeable with the Splendid Suite offer. Confirm the session length, arrival-day arrangements and any treatment cost before planning the rest of the evening.

The trade-off: a riverside resort is a different experience from a secluded lakeside retreat, and the wider hotel welcomes families and events. Ask about planned gatherings and the suite position if quiet matters. Choose this when the suite, bath and shared spa are the main attraction, rather than northern-fell access.

Which part of the Lakes suits your break?

For a short celebration, reduce transfers. Windermere has branch-line rail connections, but a hotel in the wider Windermere area still needs an onward journey. Langdale Chase and Gilpin deliver different experiences despite sharing that broad destination. Ask each hotel how to complete the journey with luggage and how you would return after dinner elsewhere.

For a walking weekend, choose one valley. Brimstone, The Forest Side and Lodore place the trip in Great Langdale, Grasmere and Borrowdale respectively. Pick the area that fits your intended day, then choose an achievable walk for the weather and both guests’ abilities. There is little benefit in paying for a retreat and spending the middle day crossing the park.

For more flexibility, investigate Ambleside. Rothay Manor is the shortlist’s Ambleside option. Compare it with a more secluded stay if independent dinners and changing your plans on the day matter. Our Lake District area guide explains the wider base choices.

For activities or a self-contained retreat, look beyond Windermere. Another Place shifts the trip to Ullswater; Armathwaite Hall points towards Bassenthwaite; The Swan offers a southern base at Newby Bridge. Pick the shore that fits most of your plans. A longer list is useful only if it helps you avoid repeatedly crossing the region.

Car-free does not mean transfer-free. Use the National Park’s official transport guidance to check rail gateways and onward options, then verify the current timetable and last return. Arrange rural taxis ahead. Boats can be part of a day out when services align; do not rely on them as an unverified late-evening hotel transfer.

Book privacy, dinner and spa time as one plan

A private hot tub describes who uses the water, not necessarily how secluded the surrounding terrace feels. Ask about sightlines from paths and neighbouring accommodation, screening, operating hours and any maintenance restrictions. We have not inspected privacy at these hotels. If it is central to a proposal or anniversary, request current details for the actual room.

For shared spa time, confirm what the rate includes, whether you need a slot and whether treatments are additional. A large hydrotherapy pool and a private in-room sauna solve different needs. Use our Lake District spa-hotel comparison if the thermal facilities should determine the booking.

For dinner, reserve the table before making the room non-refundable. Check which menu applies, whether dietary needs can be met, any deposit and how a delayed arrival would be handled. A dining credit may cover a different total from a dinner-inclusive rate; compare the complete cost without relying on a package name.

Ask about weddings, private events and refurbishment on your exact dates. Check room position as well as the hotel’s general atmosphere. For accessibility, describe the whole journey you need: arrival, bedroom, bathroom, restaurant and spa. A photograph of a freestanding bath or a scenic garden does not establish whether either is usable for your party.

A relaxed two-night plan

We suggest keeping the first evening close to the hotel: arrive, settle in and have dinner without another long journey. Use the full day for one local outing, leaving time for the room, bath or spa you chose. Keep the final morning simple enough that breakfast does not become a race to a distant departure point.

Choose a wet-weather alternative before travelling. That might be an unhurried lunch, a booked treatment or simply time indoors together. Avoid making a proposal depend entirely on a boat sailing, a sunset or a demanding fell route. If you have only one night, simplify further: one hotel, one dinner and one feature worth staying in for.

If a private soak is the main reason for the trip, use our Lake District hotels with hot tubs comparison to choose the exact accommodation and distinguish exclusive facilities from shared spa access.

Quick answers

Common questions about hotels in Lake District

Practical answers for comparing the shortlist before you book.

Which Lake District hotel is best for a romantic anniversary?

Gilpin is our private-spa choice when the room itself is the celebration; Langdale Chase is stronger when a Windermere view matters most. Brimstone suits adults wanting included shared spa access, while The Forest Side suits couples organising the trip around dinner. Choose the experience first, then reserve its exact room and inclusions.

Which romantic Lake District hotels have private hot tubs?

Gilpin documents private hot tubs in several named categories, including Spa Suites and Spa Lodges; those two categories also provide private sauna and steam facilities. Rothay Manor specifically documents a private cedarwood hot tub for its Buttermere Pavilion Suite. Neither a Gilpin booking nor a Pavilion Suite booking generally guarantees those facilities: use the precise category name.

Which of these hotels are adults-only?

Brimstone is the adults-only hotel in this selection and requires hotel guests to be 18 or over. An adults-only spa does not make the whole hotel adults-only: Lodore’s Falls Spa is restricted to over-18s, while its hotel also welcomes families. Another Place and The Swan also welcome families; The Daffodil’s spa is 16-plus. Do not infer a hotel-wide age policy from a couples package or spa description.

Which romantic hotel has a guaranteed lake view?

Langdale Chase publishes Windermere Rooms facing the lake and gardens, making it a clear starting point. Book a named view category and have the outlook confirmed in writing. The Daffodil also publishes named Lake View rooms, while Armathwaite Hall’s Deluxe Lake View Rooms look towards Bassenthwaite. Confirm the precise outlook: a lake-view restaurant does not establish what every bedroom overlooks.

Can we plan a romantic Lake District break without a car?

Yes, if you plan the final transfer before choosing the hotel. Windermere is reached by branch-line rail, while Penrith is a northern gateway. Rothay Manor is an Ambleside option to investigate; rural hotels such as Gilpin and Brimstone need more deliberate onward travel. Check the current bus, luggage route, last return and taxi availability rather than assuming the hotel name identifies its nearest station.

Is spa access included at these hotels?

Brimstone, Armathwaite Hall and The Daffodil publish included resident facilities, with different age and access rules. Another Place includes Swim Club. The Swan includes Holte Spa with specified categories, including Splendid Suites, within published hours. Gilpin’s private facilities depend on the accommodation. Lodore ordinarily includes a timed session with suites; other rooms pay separately. Confirm date-specific terms during its 2027 works. Treatments are separate unless a package says otherwise.

Are there works planned at Lodore Falls?

The official accommodation page announces Falls Spa expansion from 3 January to 25 March 2027 and says the spa will remain open, with possible activity in parts of the hotel garden during early stages. Ask which facilities, views, access paths and rooms could be affected on your dates. An operating spa is not a guarantee of a disturbance-free stay.

How long should a romantic Lake District break be?

We suggest two nights if you want both a slow hotel day and time outdoors. For one night, keep arrival, dinner and spa in the same area and avoid an ambitious cross-park itinerary. Three nights give more flexibility to move a walk or boat trip around the weather. This is itinerary advice, not a hotel minimum-stay policy.

Methodology

These ten existing hotel entries represent different couples’ trips rather than a comprehensive or price-ranked list. Research checked official room, dining and spa pages on 28 October 2026, with National Park transport guidance for arrival planning. Brimstone policy evidence was available in indexed official-page extracts; direct retrieval returned an access restriction. We have not stayed, dined, used the spas, inspected accessibility or tested room privacy or soundproofing. Confirm the exact category, facilities, dinner, access route and any works for your dates.
